Fabulous! Engaging and thoroughly readable! Loved it.,

This review is from: Hup!: Training Flushing Spaniels the American Way (Hardcover)
This book helped me tremendously to understand the basics and understand the entire process of training a flushing spaniel. The author speaks clearly and explains all steps extremely well and his instructions are so very "understandable". The author also writes with a genuine love of the dogs that comes through in all his chapters, and there's a great beginning where he goes over each spaniel breed and talks to real breeders about the attributes of each breed with regard to working ability, temperament etc. I highly recommend this wonderful book to anyone who loves working with their spaniel and will be training them to do field trials, or hunt test, or working dog certificates (as I am).

Best spaniel hunt book ever,

This review is from: Hup!: Training Flushing Spaniels the American Way (Hardcover)
I began training English Cocker Spaniels in the field some 14 yrs ago. A friend turned me onto this book and it has become my bible for training flushing spaniels. It is very common sense an even if you have never trained a spaniel before it is easy to follow. It also has a wonderful section on each breed which is of great help to those wanting to choose a spaniel hunting companion. Jim Spencer has made it easy for anyone to train a hunting companion in the field. Thanks Jim.

This book is good for a novice too, we have had dogs but they were just never good hunters. This book tells you easily what to do what not to do and how the trainer does it. One example would be the hush something to learn right away and the writer explains how he does it and if the dog is stubborn to just keep doing it....and it works simple and works. I am glad a purchased this book!

The book for working Spaniel training,
By
This review is from: Hup!: Training Flushing Spaniels the American Way (Paperback)
If you have decided to take on the training of a Spaniel, this is the book to have. Spaniels have suffered the popularity of the Labrador and Golden Retriever. This makes finding relavent and up to date materials hard to come by. I personally have a library full of dog training books and videos. If you intend to train a Spaniel in the proper, traditional way, spend your money on this book!
This book is clear and concise with plenty of photographs and illustrations. Of all the books I have, this is the one I come back to reference again and again.

"Hup", is a very good book to read to teach the reader how to train their dog the correct way. I'd suggest to get and read before you get your puppy so you do it correctly the first time. Well written and explained.

Must Read for All Flushing Spaniel Owners,
By Ted Claussen (Olympia, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hup!: Training Flushing Spaniels the American Way (Paperback)
This is the main flushing spaniel "handbook" that we send off with all our puppy clients. Mr. Spencer has a wonderful knack for spanielling and explains the ins and outs of a working American spaniel, minus the politics, in a simple manner that even our British cousins can appreciate. It is a book that will never go out of style and should sit on the shelf of every flushing spaniel owner's bookshelf.

second edition-same book as first,

This review is from: Hup!: Training Flushing Spaniels the American Way (Paperback)
I purchased the second edition since I have the first. Unfortunately, unless you are into the recent changes in the cocker spaniel field trials and field bred cockers, there is little or no changes. It is practically the same book. Since the first edition can be found in hardcover, and is a top gundog book, I would recommend buying that one unless you are interested in the cocker spaniel as a field dog.
