Book Description

January 30, 2001
After centuries of intercontinental war, chaos, and reconstruction, Earth wants to reassert itself on the planet it built and colonized at great cost nearly a millenium before...Novus. Abandoned during Earth's woes, Novus has learned to exist on its own and now rejects the mother planet's ancient claims. It now must decide how far it will go to maintain its independence; fully aware that it has developed a society where war no longer exists. Huperum has taken its place. Yet, it too extracts the ultimate price few are willing to pay. One who does is Keef Terrason, determined to restore the lost honor and prominence of his people, Pearthia, the new world's first colonists. Standing in his way is Pendar Loriat, an Akasian, bred and trained to rule, descendant of Novus' first Huper, Pendar the Great. Into this setting arrives Earth's new Consul General, Sean Lewis, sent to Novus to convince the current Huper to meet Earth's demands. Earth does not want conflict, but is determined to take what is not willingly given. It believes it has paid to high a price not to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hupe it Up, September 20, 2001

This review is from: Huperum (Paperback)
This is a long book, and the action is tense, packed and labyrinthine at times... but overall a good read. If you like Frank Herbert you will mostly likely enjoy Huperum. The author does a serviceable job of projecting the conflicts between a colonialist Earth that no longer holds the monopoly on what is "right" -- and the adventures of a strong-willed man, Keef Terrason who is hell bent on teaching both the colony and his colonialist masters a lesson or two.

Worth the extra money for the deluxe oversize paperback.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doug's Review, April 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Huperum (Paperback)
Huperum is a good read. The author has an interesting setting. That setting is a universe where man seems to be on his own. In this setting Novus is man's shining example of what can be accomplished. The plot centers around the conflict between Earth and Novus as Earth tries to reestablish its control after a absence caused by chaos on Earth. Nicely woven into the plot are the conflicts between the citizens of Novus. There are good developing Characters. Huperum itself is an interesting concept and the way the leading characters approach it is exciting. The book is an excellent accomplishment for a first book. The book also deserves a sequal. Having read thousands of SF books going back to the Golden Age of the 50s, I pronounce this book as good SF.

Brian (Sunny California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Huperum (Paperback)
This book has it all - murder, love, mystery, and intrigue in a science fiction setting. It kept me up at night as I got throughly involved with Keef, his friends, and his enemies. You won't be disappointed. It's easy and enjoyable reading for all ages.
