Vastly technical and full of chops. Light on melody. Guitarists will love it. Others will enjoy it. Dont expect pretty Windham Hill melodies here. Your in for some solo finger-style maddness. One thing thats unique about Ross is he plays a Baritone guitar, slightly larger with more bottom end. Very pretty.

Huron Street shows Ross in all his brillance,

This review is from: Huron Street (Audio CD)
I became a fan of Don Ross after hearing his first Narada recording, "Passion Sessions". Since then I became aware of the several albums that he released in Canada, and I had wanted to hear them, so when I saw that his latest CD "Huron Street" was music culled from his earlier Canadian albums, I was excited. "Huron Street" doesn't disappoint. After a few listens the songs spring to life in all their texture and harmony. At times Ross's technical ability overshadows his song writing in that he fills every measure of music with slaps and taps and harmonics that can become overwhelming. The songs show his writing style which does not seperate melody from technique. It might not appeal to everyone, but it is unique, and I find it interesting and moving. That is just a minor critizism of what is a very good fingerstyle guitar record. Check it out for yourself.

Great cd, ignore the 2 star reviewers,

First of all I can't believe anyone could give this cd 2 or 3 stars. This is first rate material. The comparisons to Hedges are apt, how could that be a bad thing? Ross is a technical wizard and few indeed can play at his level of ability. Far from just playing the guitar, the compositions are bright, memorable, and energizing. I waited too long to buy this cd. Hope to hear Don play one day, but he seems to be playing almost exclusively in Canada.

Great Guitar Player,

I have been listening to Don Ross for about 9 years or so. The last time I got to see him was in 1996 when he won the national fingerpicking contest in Winfield, KS. It is worth to go hear him play. I absoutley love this cd. I strongly suggest that if you haven't heard of this guitar player, this would be a good cd to order.

Don Ross: Get to know him!,

I'll start by saying this: Any self-respecting guitar enthusiast, especially those of acoustic guitar, should know the works of Don Ross. Not only is he technically astounding, he's a great composer. Though this disc is all solo guitar, Ross' arrangements and methods are full of sonic suprises. He seems to coax, tickle, thump, and thrash several sounds out of his strings, which is made all the more remarkable when one realizes Don Ross only has two hands! His ability to throw harmonic chords in the middle of what would be a solo for mere mortals is ear-bending, but at the same time, NOT weird or unpleasant. That's the most remarkable thing! The quality of this recording is also remarkable. Every twang of each string and rumble of wood is sharp and clearly distinguishable. Great sound quality for a great artist. If you love guitar (or great music in general) buy this CD and hear the boundaries of guitar sound bent and broken.

Don Ross is certainly one of the strongest players in the world today. His technical prowess always underscores the composition and this is what sets him apart from the mob. I have had the opportunity to see him perform live...absolutely unforgettable.Keep a vigil watch on the entertainment columns published in your area...or easier still, his website ..www.gobyfish.com...he could be heading your way. Huron Street should impress music fans in general (no one could ever accuse rap of being categorized as music) and guitar purists will surely drool.

I've made a point of finding where the guitar standard is today and with guys like Don Ross, Tommy Emmanuel and Stanley Jordan you better have some good lyrics or get a genetic enhancement because your not going out shine anyone on guitar.

I first heard Don's incredible skills a couple years ago when he came to my school to perform for the music department and everyone who knew anything about guitar was raving about him the entire time leading up to his performance. I was awestruck and couldn't believe someone human had the ability to do these things on a guitar; I had never heard anything like it. Ever since I've been in love with his style of guitar playing and Huron Street is yet another amazing album with his unique style. Just this past weekend I had the opportunity to hear him live again as he came up to my school's music camp and gave us an incredible performance again. Not only is he such a great player, he's also a really nice and personable guy. He was more than happy to answer questions and I think he puts all he has into every performance. His music is just... incredible!

The One and Only: Don Ross,
By Daniel Han "Dan 'the Man' Han" (Waterloo, ON, Canada) - See all my reviews

Him and his music are simply gloious; you may think this guy as one of the players of either cheesy lounge guitar music or technique-but-no-music noises. However, Don Ross's uniqueness do not apply to any of those; he is a great composer & virtuoso with such gift of musicality. Tunes are distinct from the majority of what we call "guitar music". (try track 1, 3, 6, 10, 12 on this CD...especially 3!!!!) Yeah, I'M ONE OF THE GUYS OF THE HURON MUSIC DEPARTMENT....Dan "the Man" Han...I'VE BEEN DOING MUSIC FOR YEARS, AND I CONSIDER MYSELF AS A VERY FINE MUSICIAN WITH EXCEPTIONAL MUSICALITY....FOR THAT MATTER USUALLY MANY CONTEMPORARY MUSICIANS DO NOT SATISFY ME, BUT DON ROSS, OH GOD, THE FIRST TIME I HEARD HIM PLAYING, I WAS ADORING HIM AND HIS MUSIC......SO YA, THIS IS A MUST-BUY!!!!! |
