The Off Season, March 4, 2006
This review is from: Hurricane Hex (Charmed) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Charmed ones are off to Florida for a bit of a vacation and to help a friend's marriage. They plan this even though there is an existing hurricane heading toward Florida. They hope they will be too far North to be bothered. But nothing is ever simple for the Charmed Ones.
Soon it becomes apparent that the storm is heading further North than originally predicted. Now the trio has to deal with a terrible storm, rogue magic, folk medicine, stubborn personalities, visions of disaster, and more all while trying not to give away the fact that they are witches.
A pretty good book. Obviously the author did not know enough about hurricanes, their history and how the hurricane season works but even with the recent coverage and analysis of Hurricane Katrina, I don't think the majority of readers will notice the failings. The book also did the unusual in that it changed an aspect of what has happened on the show (this is usually a no-no but it made this story work). I was also surprised that there was no real explanation given for what was going on. It seemed like there was a good solution in the details but it wasn't used (hint: spelldump). If you like the Charmed books you will probably rate this somewhere in the top third.

try a little harder, May 8, 2006
This review is from: Hurricane Hex (Charmed) (Mass Market Paperback)
the charmed ones are down in florida when pheobe is asked to be at a writer's convention. while they are there, they visit an old friend of paige's just as hurricane george is about to come to shore. while they are visiting, they meet 2 old ladies who are fun and a little eceentric. they find out that one of them is practicing folk magic with paige's old friend and that this may cause a lot more damage than any of them knows.
the book really lacks any real suspense. it was a little too g rated for my liking. it has no demons of any kind either.

Another Vacation Ruined by Meddlesome Magic, April 15, 2006
This review is from: Hurricane Hex (Charmed) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Charmed Ones should know by now that they will never have a magic free vacation, and yet with high hopes they head to Florida, where Phoebe leads a writing workshop. After the workshop ends, the sisters visit Sharon Grant, Paige's college friend, and her husband Ben. Paige can tell that something is amiss with her friend's marriage, but Sharon won't talk about it--or the folk magic that she practices with a neighbor. Meanwhile, the sisters have bigger worries- a serious hurricane is coming, and hurricanes can adversely affect magic. If the Charmed Ones can't convince Sharon to stop her amateur use of magic, this hurricane will be their last.
Hurricane Hex differs from traditional Charmed novels in its lack of a demon to vanquish. There are no villains here, only misguided innocents and quirky characters: Margaret, a retired schoolteacher well versed in Florida folklore, and Agnes, a tough old woman and master domino player. Much of the novel is spent planning for the hurricane and when it finally comes it doesn't live up to the anticipation. A good read, but not one of the better Charmed novels.
