Grades 4-7--A brief look at several aircraft flown by the Air Force Reserve's 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), and NASA to investigate hurricanes and other tropical storms firsthand. The utilitarian text describes the planes and their evolutionary history as weather spotters, presents lists of the individual specifications for each aircraft, and quotes pilots and scientists on the work they do and the risks they take. Detailed chapter notes are evidence of careful research and the text is larded with informative, full-color photos. While this is not an essential purchase, it will certainly enrich a meteorology unit, especially when teamed with Keith Greenberg's more personal Storm Chaser: Into the Eye of a Hurricane (Blackbirch, 1997) and Patricia Lauber's excellent Hurricanes: Earth's Mightiest Storms (Scholastic, 1996).
