Book Description

When Aunt Margaret plays her clarinet, her music has a profound effect on the weather, even conjuring up Hurricane Gladys, who promptly blows the clarinet clean out of sight.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bottner (Bootsie Barker Bites) gives new meaning to the term "wind instrument" with this idiosyncratic outing. Aunt Margaret, a late-blooming musician, uses her clarinet to mimic sounds in the environment, from animal noises to a locomotive's chugging. When Hurricane Gladys comes inland, Margaret is thrilled: "Thundering horses couldn't keep me from jamming with a hurricane!" But the tempest upsets her tempo, and the clarinet blows away. The music dries up, until Margaret's narrating niece buys her aunt a harmonica, Hurricane Harold hits town and the prodigal clarinet returns. Bottner colors her prose by giving Margaret such pronouncements as "Gotta dance, gotta sing, gotta do my thing-a-ling" and "Sanctifying Satchmo!" There's even a hint of magic: the weather grows ominous when Margaret plays a hot riff, and calms during soothing melodies. Yalowitz's (Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch) muted, grainy hues and orderly compositions, while unconventional, restrain the action, a startling contrast to the whirlwind plot. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2?Dowdy, middle-aged Aunt Margaret finds an old clarinet in the basement and sets off "to study the sounds of life." She has a blast mimicking what she hears at the animal hospital, the train station, and the park. She thrills to the helter-skelter city sounds of a parade, and when some heavy weather comes on the scene, she says, "'Thundering horses couldn't keep me from jamming with a hurricane.'" Unfortunately, Hurricane Gladys's gale-force winds blow away Aunt Margaret's clarinet. Sadness prevails as Uncle Seymour, the niece/storyteller, and the townspeople try to find a substitute for the lost instrument, and the niece selects a 25 cent harmonica. "'Testifying troubadors!'" Aunt Margaret exclaims squeaking out the first high notes and, as her song trills and vibrates, Hurricane Harold sweeps into town blowing Aunt Margaret's clarinet in through the door. Drawings in muted colors, surprisingly mobile in their stylization, add humor and convey the mood and action of this jazzy little story.?Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NE

More About the Author

Barbara Bottner began writing for children in the 1970's, when she broke her leg doing off-Broadway Theater and decided to consider a different career. Having gotten a degree in painting, she began to hang out in the children's book section of libraries and bookstores. She was amazed at the originality of the art and fell in love with picture books. Slightly fickle, she also wrote I Can Reads, eventually middle grade and YA novels. She stretched out into writing for television and film and also published essays and short stories in national magazines. She returned to writing books for children and Bootsie Barker Bites, illustrated by Peggy Rathmann, a classic, was translated into eight languages and animated for television. Barbara prevailed upon her MD husband, Gerald Kruglik, to co-write Wallace's Lists, illustrated by Olof Landstrom, which was also animated, (Weston Woods) is translated into Swedish and is forthcoming in French.
Barbara collaborated with Michael Emberley, resulting in Miss Brooks Loves Books (and I don't). Anyone who's ever struggled with falling in love with reading, or is the parent or teacher of a picky reader will rejoice in the way Miss Brooks handles a curmudgeon of a first grader. Miss Brooks Loves Books has appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List and is nominated for the prestigious Bill Martin Jr. Award. Barbara teaches writing and consults with writers all over the country; she was honored to receive the New School Distinguished Teaching Award in 1990.

This review is from: Hurricane Music (Hardcover)
We checked this book out of the library kind of by accident -- I just grabbed it off the shelf on our way to check out. From the first time we read it when we got it home, it was an instant favorite. The pictures are fun and vibrant, the characters and language ("Holy Faloozala!") are as colorful as the illustrations, and the main character's love of music is absolutely contagious. Both my 4 1/2 year old and my 2 1/2 year old are in love with this book. I'm online now to order our own copy of it to keep forever. Everyone I have shared this book with, young and old, has thought it was just wonderful.
