Product Description

This set consists of three different Woodturning Bowl Gouges with a Superflute style shape. All bowl gouges are made from High Speed Steel. Hurricane Turning Tools are made in one of the world's largest turning tool factories. They are made out of M2 High Speed Steel for superior edge holding ability and will last 8X longer between sharpenings as compared to carbon steel. In addition to the high quality steel, Hurricane Turning Tools have extra long handles, some as long at 16 inches. The handles are made from solid Ash. These tools compare with any HSS tool on the market and are sold throughout the world. Compare these tools to others that sell for two to three times the price. Ships ready for you to sharpen.

Hard to beat for the money!
The good:
There is enough flute to sharpen these tools many times.
The steel is good and takes a good edge. I holds its edge much better than "benjamins best" tools
The handle shape is nice and I much prefer the long handles.

The neutral:
The shape of the grind is very basic and like most turning tools, should be reground.

The bad:
The finish on the handles was horrible - some sort of thick blackish paint that filled in the very roughly turned shape. I took my random orbit sander to them and then wiped on some polyurethane/stain combo and in 15 min had a nice looking and feeling set of handles.

My thought was what do you expect for that price? After a year of working with them, I'm not at all unhappy that I bought them!

The turning tools are eseetially basic, good quality tools that serve average turners (like me) very well. They have enough heft to be useful on rough and unbalanced wood and hold an edge just fine. They don't measure up to the top name brand tools, but the price and quality make them very attractive.

These are definitely superior gouges, and for the beginner (like me) that thinks that there's no difference between bowl gouges (or tools in general), and spindle tools, this photo should clear up that problem. On the left are some of my spindle tools, on the right are my bowl gouges and scrapers. On spindles, you are going with the grain, riding the bevel, and letting the wood come to you. When making bowls, boxes, or other non-spindle items, you are going with, and against the grain all at the same time (the difference is similar to the difference of pealing a banana, and hollowing out a pumpkin). Doing non-spindle work requires a little more counter balance.
This one is a safety tip: ALWAYS use a safety mask when turning non-spindles ESPECIALLY when turning logs. Even when using the highest amount of safety precautions, I have had the occasional catch throw the log into the air, and (one time) hit me in the (protected) face. Get an ansi / osha approved safety mask. Also, start at SLOW speed.

I ordered these bowl gouges awhile back and thought I should share my experience with them. These are excellent bowl gouges, particularly when you consider the price. They sharpen up easily, hold an edge well and do a good job on facework. I put an Ellsworth grind on the smallest one and a traditional grind on the other 2. I've turned bowls, shallow platters, cups and a funnel with them. I like the handles on these, nice and long and stout. I can't really think of anything negative with them. I liked them so much I ordered a set of shallow fluted spindle gouges from the same maker.

I am an occasional turner, until recently mainly turning for furniture. I bought one of these tools for a friend who turns a great deal but has mostly very old tools. This was the first long handled tool he has had and liked it so much he is considering making new handles for all of his tools if not replacing them. These tool are unusually long having 34 cm handles and 26 cm steel shafts. Because of this lenght and the stress on the shaft it creates, they have limited the flutes to 9cm, 9.5cm and 16 cm. I have old tools with small shafts that have been bent do to a catch so I don't consider this a problem at all. I have only had a chance to use one of the tools so far myself and it did the job right out of the package. I have some much more expensive Sorby tools that do not perform any better but perhaps an expert could tell a difference. The four rating is due to my not having had a chance to fully test them all not due to any problems with them.

These tools are biguch bigger than ones I had previously ordered. Plenty of flute on all of them. Much sturdier than the one I had snap in half with a mild catch.

This has really improved my toolset, and for the price I am not so fussy as to say that these are not perfect. The finish is so-so but the action and the shape really work for me. Definitely recommended for hobby turners or semi-pro like myself. The three sizes will help me decide on future tools when I upgrade.
