Product Description

This set consists of three different Woodturning Bowl Gouges with a Superflute style shape. All bowl gouges are made from High Speed Steel. Hurricane Turning Tools are made in one of the world's largest turning tool factories. They are made out of M2 High Speed Steel for superior edge holding ability and will last 8X longer between sharpenings as compared to carbon steel. In addition to the high quality steel, Hurricane Turning Tools have extra long handles, some as long at 16 inches. The handles are made from solid Ash. These tools compare with any HSS tool on the market and are sold throughout the world. Compare these tools to others that sell for two to three times the price. Ships ready for you to sharpen.

They sharpen up easily, hold an edge well and do a good job on facework.

First, the flutes are really short on the 3/8" and 1/2" (American measurement) gouges, at about 3 1/2" of usable flute.

The turning tools are eseetially basic, good quality tools that serve average turners (like me) very well.

The turning tools are eseetially basic, good quality tools that serve average turners (like me) very well. They have enough heft to be useful on rough and unbalanced wood and hold an edge just fine. They don't measure up to the top name brand tools, but the price and quality make them very attractive.

Hard to beat for the money!
The good:
There is enough flute to sharpen these tools many times.
The steel is good and takes a good edge. I holds its edge much better than "benjamins best" tools
The handle shape is nice and I much prefer the long handles.

The neutral:
The shape of the grind is very basic and like most turning tools, should be reground.

The bad:
The finish on the handles was horrible - some sort of thick blackish paint that filled in the very roughly turned shape. I took my random orbit sander to them and then wiped on some polyurethane/stain combo and in 15 min had a nice looking and feeling set of handles.

My thought was what do you expect for that price? After a year of working with them, I'm not at all unhappy that I bought them!

I just received the Hurricane 3 bowl gouge set and have a few observations for potential buyers. My goal was to get a stout bowl gouge to use for roughing green blanks so I can save my Crown PM for more fussy tasks, and figured I'd find a use for the other gouges.

First, the flutes are really short on the 3/8" and 1/2" (American measurement) gouges, at about 3 1/2" of usable flute. When I went back and looked at the pictures, I found them to accurately represent the flutes--I didn't check this adequately prior to purchasing. The short flute won't affect performance, but as the tool shortens with sharpening, these will not last as long as other gouges which commonly have 5-5 1/2" of usable flute.

Second, the ferrule on the 5/8" gouge is the same, small size as on the smaller gouges. There's not much wood between the gouge and the ferrule--it could more easily break on a bad catch than a tool with more substance there. Unfortunately, these tools are apparently especially attractive to novice turners, who might not realize the potential hazard. With the grind I use, I don't get catches very often and have gotten past having bad ones.

I have not ground or used the tools yet, so I can't comment on the quality of the steel. The finish on the good sized handles is fairly rough; noticeably rougher than Benjamin's Best tools, by comparison.

Caveat Emptor.

These came 2 days ahead of schedule, and perform very well. They were not only sharpened, but polished. Great buy. One note - the handles are a light color, like ash or maple, rather than dark/black color shown here. Not a big deal, just FYI.
