3.0 out of 5 stars Cute stories but the book is in desperate need of editing
The stories were cute and all true to my experience in the Caribbean, but the book is difficult to read sometimes due to the lack of editing. An "editor" wrote a preface, but as a professional editor myself, I can tell she is definitely NOT a professional editor. When will authors realize there is a need to find a real editor and not just a friend who claims to know how...

If you've not yet been exposed to the humor of Miss Mermaid, then you're in for a treat! This wild and whacky selection of her tales from the Caribbean will have you rolling on the floor laughing! Meet a host of unique, intriguing characters... Jungle Jim who advertises outings with his "Charter the Derelict!" cards... Da-Fema-Mon, flummoxed by islanders' lack of addresses, house numbers, shoes, and other hilarious irregularities, finally gives up and goes total island bonkers... Grace Klutz, a wild and whacky import... and numerous other delightful, colorful folks who bring you miles of smiles... Well, as the author says, "Mon, d'is island life be something different!" And so it is! For a fun read, with a dose of bawdiness and badness, take a sip of Miss Mermaid's little island masterpiece. You won't regret it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read, March 29, 2010

Thoroughly enjoyed the mad and racy world of the BVI, which is so completely different from the so-called urbane and civilised world of the big cities - whether they be in the UK or the US. Living in an island myself, I can almost identify with the irreverent and nearly lawless nature of the BVI. Characters are larger than life and well depicted. Be prepared to chuckle regularly!

4.0 out of 5 stars If you love the crazy caribbean, you'll love this., April 27, 2011

In my travels in the caribbean, I've met crazy people and had some even crazier experiences. This book makes me miss those times more than anything I've ever read. Really fun. Silly. A slice of reality (in the Caribbean sense). It's like taking a vacation from home.

Now, is the writing the sharpest I've ever read? No. But so what?! The stories are so great, the setting so spectacular, it makes for a satisfying read.

I am in love with the Caribbean and have visited often.

This book makes me want to move there and become part

of the island life.

Dear Miss Mermaid was brave enough to set out to the

islands on her own and live the lifestyle. I'm jealous

that I probably don't have her guts, but she allowed

me to read and feel her mostly humorous adventures.

Dear Miss Mermaid:"Please write more." This is the perfect

Caribbean cruise read.

4.0 out of 5 stars This IS island life, May 15, 2010

Before I went to the West Indies I read Herman Wouk's 'Don't Stop the Carnival' which at the time I thought could only be a fantasy. It wasn't......he got it right. I've waited some 20 or more years to find another read which captures 'island life' and Dear Miss Mermaid tells it vividly. Centered on her experiences in the Virgin Islands from her American viewpoint, she encapsulates the essence of living and working afloat and ashore in the Caribbean in all 16 of her colourful stories. A 'Must Take' if you are fortunate enough to be going to any of the magical Caribbean islands of sun, sea and sky,......and if you are not....dream on.

This review is from: Hurricanes & Hangovers: and other tall tales and loose lies from the coconut telegraph (Paperback)
I read Hurricanes and Hangovers by Dear Miss Mermaid and laughed myself silly. Having spent 2 months in the Caribbean, this book brought back all those memories about the quirky Caribbean life style. Her humerous stories are right on with the slow moving, life is what it is Caribbean mindset. If you have visited or lived in the Caribbean, this book is a must. It will bring back that special time in your life. If you haven't been to the Caribbean, reading this book will give you a greater understanding of what life is like in this different culture --- and it will make you want one of those islands to be your next vacation destination. Welcome to the Caribbean.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laughing all the way to the Islands..., July 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hurricanes & Hangovers: and other tall tales and loose lies from the coconut telegraph (Paperback)
I picked up this book in June when we were planning a trip to the Virgins and started laughing out loud from page one. If you've ever been to the islands, many of the stories will ring familiar. If you haven't, you'll want to pack your bags. Tourists will recognize the places, the sounds and scents and vibes, and the sense of "island time" that prevails. But the little everyday details of island life is what makes this book especially fun and interesting. The characters (real island folks) are a hoot, and the tales of life after a hurricane are at once sad and funny, believable and unbelievable. There is a hodge-podge of modern-day pirates, 1960s drop outs, ordinary folks, and the rich and famous. It's a must-read for anyone who loves visiting the islands or is thinking about moving to the sunny climes.
