Book Description

9 and upWonders of Our World
The Wonders of our World Series offers young readers a lively and visually exciting introduction to the world around us and the forces at work shaping our planet and its future. Ten books in this series offer fascinating full-color photographs of examples from around the world to help illustrate:
-- the devastating impact volcanoes, extreme weather, and earthquakes can have
-- why the earth's forests and waterways are in danger of destruction
-- how the earth's powerful internal forces produce rocks and minerals from the ordinary to the dazzling
-- how mountains, deserts, and caves are formed

Extreme weather can cause sudden and dramatic shifts in the overall climate pattern of the earth. The results are often devastating to the land and its people. Hurricanes and Tornadoes explores:
-- how they develop
-- modern scientific methods of predicting storms
-- typhoons, cyclones, waterspouts
-- the world's biggest storms

Review

Great series! Can't say enough good things about any books from Crabtree Publishing. Neil Morris' "Wonders of Our World" series from Crabtree Publishing breaks down environment into specific subjects so that appropriate focus can be given in each educational book. These books will prove much more memorable than competitors on the same subject because they blend simplicity with an effort to entertain: kids will find them bright, colorful, and appealing beyond the usual school applications -- The Midwest Book Review --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

Taken from Chapter 7: Twister! In North America, tornadoes are often called twisters. About 700 twisters are reported every year in the USA, and smaller ones probably take the total up to 1,000. They form along a front between warm air from the Gulf of Mexico and cooler air from the north. Most twisters occur in spring and early summer, usually during the afternoon or early evening. Some twisters last for just ten minutes and travel only a short distance. Only one in every 200 travels more than 100 miles (160 kilometers). --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.
