5.0 out of 5 stars A heart-breaking tale of a little dog's perilous life.
Hurry Home Candy will make you cry. It will change the way you look at your dog. It will change the way you speak to your dog. If you don't have one, the first chapter will make you never want to take a puppy away from it's mother. Ever. I first read Hurry Home Candy when I was 7 - I'm now 23 - and the feelings and emotions which this little dog's story stirred in me...

1.0 out of 5 stars Dated, maudlin, and tedious.
I had high hopes for this book, what with all the five-star reviews, so I was very open-minded when I began to read it. However, it soon became evident how "late forties" the writing style is, with so much lingo and attitude of that era filtering into the story. Then, there is the increasingly preposterous turn of events in Candy's adventures. While the author makes a...

Hurry Home Candy will make you cry. It will change the way you look at your dog. It will change the way you speak to your dog. If you don't have one, the first chapter will make you never want to take a puppy away from it's mother. Ever. I first read Hurry Home Candy when I was 7 - I'm now 23 - and the feelings and emotions which this little dog's story stirred in me then, are triggered even now. I only have to read the last paragraph and I'm in floods of tears. It's such a beautiful, timeless tale of how humans will never quite understand animals, of how children who promise to always look after a pet for ever and ever, are distracted by a shiny new bike, of how little dogs, like Candy, through intent or accident, are lost or abandoned every single day. I just wanted to share my great love of this book with others, and if you have children, let them read it while they are young. I have treasured this story for many years, and I will continue to do so, whilst taking extra special care of my pets as well. Feel a little dog's fear as he is snatched from his mother's warmth and taken to a place with a cold kitchen floor and the constant threat of the broom. Feel a little dog's heart burst with the love for his new little boy and girl who make the thoughts of brooms melt away. And feel the terror of the trip which splits the little dog from his children and sets him on his heart - wrenching journey to find them, and to survive. Along the way, Candy meets some other humans and in certain ways changes their lives - but can anyone change his?

5.0 out of 5 stars Forty years later, October 18, 2003

Hurry Home Candy was such a significant read of my childhood - the fear of abandonment and the joy of being loved experienced and retold through the emotions of a dog! A special book, timeless, universal themes sharply observed and wonderfully illustrated. I recommend for all grown up children who enjoyed Hurry Home Candy to read the recently published "Timoleon Vieta Come Home" by Dan Rhodes - Canongate Books 2003. ISBN 1 84195 389 X. This book is special too. Check it out.

I read this book over 20 years ago and was reminded of it after talking about books that effected our hearts with a few friends. Every child should read this!

I first read this book in junior high school, some 25 years ago, and it affected me deeply then as much as now. A wonderful book for children of all ages to learn compassion for animals, it will make you cry with both sadness and joy for all the trials that little Candy goes through. I am so pleased to finally have my own copy from Amazon.com and will definitely use it in my classroom as a teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars 45 years ago - my first dog book, March 7, 2006
This review is from: Hurry Home, Candy (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
I first read this precious book forty-five years ago. It was 1961 and I was in the 5th grade. Until I read this book, I was terrified of dogs, but after reading it, I became a "dog person". Although I own almost every dog book in print, this one is still my favorite. My daughter read it when she was in fourth grade and loved it too. Needless to say, she's also a dog lover. My granddaughter is only two years old, but I have a copy for her as soon as she's ready.

5.0 out of 5 stars left a life-long impression, September 4, 2000

This review is from: Hurry Home, Candy (Harper Trophy Books) (Paperback)
I read this book when I was in third grade (25 years ago). Unlike many books I read as a child, I've never re-read this but have always meant to. Part of the reason I've never read it is that I always forget the title. Someone on my children's literature list knew the book and I made it a point to write it down right away. The other reason I haven't re-read it as an adult is that I've never come across a used copy at a yard sale, book store, etc. Maybe nobody ever wants to part with theirs! Honestly, all I remember from reading this book was it is about a lost dog. But it made such an impression on me as a child. It really moved me in the way that Black Beauty moved me. And the memory of the feelings the story envoked have lasted with me always. I look forward to finally re-visiting this little gem.

I first read this book in junior high. It is now thirty some years later and I am ordering it to read again. I am sure that my children will enjoy and remember it like I have. This is a "must read" for anyone who loves animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurry Home Candy- Classic Book!!, October 4, 2011

I remember reading this book back in the 4th grade. Now I am reading it to my children. It is still a great story. The vocabulary in the book is sophisticated enough to introduce some new words to your child while staying with an appropriate theme for children. Loved this book! Kids love it too!
