One of - If not - "THE BEST - OUTLAWS ALBUM",

I'm glad to see this album finally out on CD - released July 2001 - I replaced my vinyl copy. I think it is possibly the BEST OUTLAWS ALBUM ever - It certainly is my favorite and ranks as good, or better than their debut album "THE OUTLAWS". I highly recommend this CD - especially to anyone who has never purchased an OUTLAWS album. The songs are fresh, with excellent vocals & guitar work. Produced by Bill Szymczyk (Eagles' producer). The liner notes contain interesting commentary from band members including Hughie Thomasson (Lynyrd Skynyrd) & Henry Paul (Black Hawk). Also..., If you like this one, check out "So Low" - Hughie Thomasson's solo CD. mss

A Southern Rock Pinnacle,
By
This review is from: Hurry Sundown (Audio CD)
Before Henry Paul (of Black Hawk fame more recently) left the Outlaws to form the very credible Henry Paul Band, he, Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones (RIP), Harvey Dalton Arnold, and Monte Yoho contributed what many feel is the quintessential Outlaws album: Hurry Sundown. The band had pulled off two incredible albums with the eponymous debut and the sophomore effort "Lady in Waiting", both of which featured music that would often lean more in the country direction (and done superbly) whereas "Hurry Sundown" began a deliberate shift to a harder rocking style. Of course, Country is a portion of the recipe that made Southern Rock great and it isn't completely forsaken here as such songs as the title track,"Hurry Sundown", "Hearin' My Heart Talkin'", "So Afraid" (sung by bassist Harvey D. Arnold; has banjo in it!), and Gunsmoke (sung by Henry Paul) all have strong country elements but are country with lots more "sting" in the guitar department. I think the departures of Henry Paul and Harvey Dalton Arnold later were incidentally the departure of the "country" element from the band and it virtually disappeared after this release, sadly. Hughie Thomasson is a guitar God, though, in my opinion and one of the most overlooked talents in the music world, and I, for one, am glad his stint with Lynyrd Skynyrd is over as the Outlaws are back out there kicking up dust and Paul, Thomasson and Co. are doing what they NEED to be doing: Outlaw Music!! Fortunately, Buddah Records, in association with Arista, re-issued the first 3 (and by far the best) Outlaw albums on CD back in 2001, I think, and they need to be YOUR collection!! Let the "Florida Guitar Army" take your breath and transport you to a time when the South had truly "risen again"!

Long Live The Guitar Army,

When this album first came out, I wore it out and a few years later the cassette also. I was very happy to be able to order "Hurry Sundown" in CD format so I can enjoy these songs once again. Very seldom do artists today release efforts where all the tracks are good. The "Outlaws" have accomplished this with every album and CD they have ever released with "Hurry Sundown" being my personal favorite. This is southern rock at it's best combined with ballads, blues and Hughie showcasing his 5 string banjo skills on the tune "So afraid". I will always be a devoted fan. Green grass and high tides forever!!!!

The Best Outlaws Album - Great Personnel, Great Songs,
This review is from: Hurry Sundown (Audio CD)
The Outlaws hit their peak with this album. They had the best personnel on this LP, and showed the polish of a band that's learned the ropes through 2 previous albums. Henry Paul, who was the main country-western influence, left the band after this album. On all subsequent albums, their 'twang' was gone and they deteriorated into being an average metal band with no market differentiator.
Billy Jones got more vocals on this album than on their first 2 albums, which is another good thing. In my opinion, Hughie Thomasson's vocals are average on a good day, and Billy had the unique Neil Young-like voice that could have really differentiated these guys (they way they differentiated Neil Young himself). Holiday is an amazing song, which really shows off Billy's vocal abilities. It should be mentioned among the ranks of Lynyrd Skynyrd's greatest rock anthems. Not sure why The Outlaws don't get the airtime of Marchall Tucker, Allman Bros, Lynyrd Skynyrd and even the Pure Prarie League. They are at least as good, and maybe someday they'll get their due. Until then, this is an outstanding LP which plays like a "Best of" album -- not a bad track to be found!

3 in a row,

This is the 3rd in a row of great recordings from the Outlaws. Hurry Sundown is sometimes regarded as the best of them all. It is Great, there is no doubt. This band is truely the most underrated bands in the history of music. There are no better albums than the first 3 from this band. Unfortunately, the band lost its way I believe due to bad producers that tried to mold them into something they were not. Diablo Canyon is their last cd as a group and is the Outlaws best work since 1977 Hurry Sundown. Do not pass this cd up. You will rediscover what music should sound like, any in todays world, its easy to forget.

This has to be the best Southern Rock CD ever. The Outlaws are the definative "Southern Rock" band, period. Get this CD.I saw the Outlaws at the Warehouse in New Orleans in the mid 70's, it was a concert you can't forget. The blistering guitars of Billy and Hughie was a musical force to be reckoned with. I still can't understand why they never got the airplay they so richly deserved, the music is brilliant. The Outlaws, in my opinion, defined the movement. They crafted a blend of Country and Rock unparalleled by their peers in the industry. I pray for Arista to release a boxed set (complete catalog) of this band. This band is more than a "Well Kept Secret" they belong in the "Pantheon of Southern Rock Stars."

after 31 years. I love the Outlaws debut album but I think I like this one overall even better. "Gunsmoke", "Hurry Sundown", "Cold and Lonesome", "Holiday" and the one that grew on me more and more over the years until it became my favorite tune from this disc--"Night Wines"(RIP Billy Jones--this was your best song--and the line "It makes my heart hunger, To make my years younger" still speaks to me)---all great songs still. If you like Southern Rock--try this disc.

The Outlaws' Third Great Album In A Row,
By
This review is from: Hurry Sundown (Audio CD)
HURRY SUNDOWN is the third great Outlaws album in a row. The highlights are "Gunsmoke", written and sung by Henry Paul, and the title track, which is a story of gypsies summoning the ghost of a dead gunfighter to avenge the death of a young girl. If you love good, footstomping, guitar-oriented rock & roll, you'll love HURRY SUNDOWN.
