On a VH1 special, I watched Trent Reznor, who wrote this song, talk about Johnny Cash's performance, and he seemed surprised at how Cash "sang it like I wrote it for him." He shouldn't have been surprised.

A younger man can know pain, disappointment and sorrow, but an older man can see the patterns that have led to it, and know how deep they run. The Man in Black has known success and also pain. When he picks a palette loaded with pain, Johnny Cash shows us sorrow that is real without being pitiful or pathetic.

And that is true even he delivers the final sorrow:

"If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find a way"

Things are what they are, but they didn't have to be that way.

Johnny has mad many songs that are wonderful. The ghostly sound of "Hurt" makes it one of my favorite. I don't know of any other song that has this sound.

RIP Johnny Cash!
Your biggest fan!

A painfully great look back at a far too short life, and a goodbye that will live forever. The first time I heard it, I wept... quietly, fully and with more appreciation for his craft and skills than ever before.

This is an intense version of the song. Johnny Cash sings as if he really does feel the full meaning of the words. It is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard.
