4.0 out of 5 stars His Greatest Work, September 25, 2005

This review is from: Hurt (Audio CD)
Chris Spedding has had a fascinating career over (almost) the last four decades. A top shelf and incredibly versatile guitarist, Spedding has a formidable resume as a session player, having appeared on literally hundreds of sessions, ranging from his work with Brian Ferry and John Cale to his mid-seventies appearance as one of the Wombles! Having been part of the excellent but criminally overlooked British band The Sharks in the early seventies, Spedding released a fine trilogy of solo albums in the mid to late seventies -"Chris Spedding", "Hurt" and "Guitar Graffiti". "Hurt" is the best of the lot.

Featuring his own idiosyncratic, often humourous originals and somewhat deadpan vocals, along with a well chosen cover or two, "Hurt" sees Spedding trawl through a variety of styles - RnB, rock and roll, countryish rock and his unique take on punk/new wave, the latter typified by the irresistable "Get Outa My Pagoda", the bonus track "Pogo Dancing" (a UK single)and the stunning title track. Throughout, Spedding's guitar sparkles - he's a true original, his solos inevitably spot on and concise. His playing at the conclusion of "Hurt by Love" provides a great example of his style.

Spedding is still active today, and still recording high quality records, but "Hurt" is Chris Spedding at his best.

This German re-issue features four bonus tracks, all of which sit nicely with the original ten song album.

Chris Spedding's Hurt album is a tremendous rock and roll recording. I rememeber when I bought it the first time on vinyl and wore it out. His guitar rifts are inspiring and have a great sound. I recommend this album to all fans of Rock and Roll. Play it loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Effort, December 26, 2001

Ever since I fell in love with Chris Spedding's punkish tune "Get Outta My Pagoda", I have been searching for this album. In the early 80's, Chris Spedding's music was a staple on the local college radio station KFJC. When this German reissue was released, I was absolutely thrilled.

Chris seemlessly meshes soulful vocals, hot guitars licks, with a punk undercurrent to this effort. The songs on this album range from good to great (including the bonus tracks). The liner notes nicely chronicle this remarkable artist's career.

If you enjoy the music of Chris Spedding or want something akin to early sounding R.E.M., then you can't live without this album. So cough up the few extra bucks on this CD and buy it today.

Gina S.
