Johnny's Rendition to Hurt,
By Simon Gilmore (Fort Worth, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hurt: Personal Jesus (Audio CD)
First off I have to say that my taste in music is a wide variety of stuff. I've been a huge fan of Johnny Cash since I can remember and I'm also a huge of Nine Inch Nails. When I first heard the Cash was remixing one of the most beloved NIN songs "Hurt" I was impressed, and was very impressed when I hear and saw the video to it. This is a great song, full of emotion and should not be missed out on.

Cash will make you hurt, in a good way,
By
This review is from: Hurt: Personal Jesus (Audio CD)
What an amazing cover. I loved the Nine Inch Nails song when I was a teenager. It never occurred to me how well it would transfer to this aging legend. Cash's quivering voice presses the sorrow and regret of this song. It is absolutely beautiful. Now, I did not like the B-side of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" all that much. I just do not think Cash captured it like he did "Hurt." Hurt is great; I highly recommend you get this.epc

A Reminder of the Power behind the Great Man Johnny Cash,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hurt: Personal Jesus (Audio CD)
I recall listening to Johnny Cash when I was a child in the early 80's when my father was a fan. I admire the power of Mr. Cash's rendition of Trent Reznor's "Hurt". When I first heard Nine Inch Nails' song---I thought it was a great song. But I must say that Johnny Cash's verison literally blows the original verison away. Not many of my generation (Gen-X) who are now reaching their 30's are too familiar with Johnny Cash. Neither does the current generation (Gen-Y or Gen-whatever) really know who this man was & its a shame that they never will. He was a great influence to music (Rock, Country, Blues) that not many realize. Justin Timberlake tried in a failed attempt to let this current generation extend respect to such a great artist. Maybe if he would have stepped down from receiving the MTV award---he would have made his point clear. I had an opporntunity to know about Johnny Cash & his music due to having parents who were teenagers during the 50's. I'm glad that I have. His music, whether it is his own or a cover of someone else's work, is a true treat for any music-lover to enjoy. May God bless Johnny Cash for his gift to us. May he rest in peace with his beloved wife. The Music Industry really should morn for this great loss.

Don't be prejudiced by the brilliance of "Hurt"...,
By
This review is from: Hurt: Personal Jesus (Audio CD)
Most reviewers on this page will tell you that they didn't much care for "Personal Jesus". After listening to "Hurt" for the first time, I would have to see their point. Hurt is such a masterpiece that Personal Jesus at first, pales in comparison. I just listened to Depeche Mode's version followed by Cash's (O.K. maybe 20 times back and forth..). Cash has shown true genius in adapting this song. If you don't like the original, I think you will like the cover. If you loved the original, prepare to be stunned.... Some great songs only take on their greatness after a few listens. I think this is one of those.

If you don't get it, maybe it's you?,

A rare combination of truly great songwriting and haunting interpretation. Mr. Cash has been doing his "American" recordings for a number of years, but his version of "Hurt" is perhaps his most satisfying recent effort. A true legend, performing in legendary fashion...and we are lucky to have an elder statesmen of music that recognizes great music (regardless of original idiom) and that is willing to bring his truly unique take to it. Instead of buying the single, though...you might consider the album, American 4: When the Man Comes Around.

Fantastic!,

I knew immediately that I was hearing Johnny Cash's voice... I just couldn't believe that I was hearing him on KROQ. Fantastic cover. There is so much raw emotion that it is almost painful to listen to and so extremely beautiful at the same time.

VIDEO TRACK OF 'HURT' ONLY PLAYS ON PC'S (QUICKTIME)!!!!,
By
This review is from: Hurt: Personal Jesus (Audio CD)
Firstly, the 'enhanced cd' only works WITH QUICKTIME ON PERSONAL COMPUTERS!!! The Quicktime software is loaded with the video, just place the CD in your CD-ROM drive and follow install instructions. When I first purchased this CD, I was dumbstruck when I tried to play the 'video' track on my GE DVD Player and realized the enhanced CD was just that -- NOT DVD FORMATTED. Having led off with that admonition, the CD is stunning, despite the short, four track length. 'Wichita Lineman', track three, is worth the purchase price alone. The production values on this track are simple, clean, and piercing. 'Personal Jesus', an old Depeche Mode standard, is a good cut also. And of course, as a double whammy, there is the audio track of 'Hurt' (Track 1) and track four, the Quicktime Video version of 'Hurt'. You will not be sorry to buy this 'enhanced CD'. For those desiring the DVD version, check out American Records (Lost Highway) version of 'Hurt'. God Bless Johnny Cash and his work - we miss you.Happy Listening, Will

Surprisingly Great,

I heard this on the radio, and I could not figure out who it was. I was so impressed that I sat in the car and waited to find out. Johnny Cash uses the lyrics perfectly to fit his own style. It's amazing.

Must make Reznor proud....,
By stefanie lyon (virginia beach) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hurt: Personal Jesus (Audio CD)
I can imagine the great honor that Trent Reznor must feel...having his beautiful song covered by one of the most sincere artists in music history. I am not the biggest country fan in the universe- yet I have an appreciation for artist such as Cash and Nelson. I am a fan of Nine Inch Nails and can say that Cash has captured the organic nature of the song and has sung it as if his own. It is sad and beautiful and a masterwork.Personal Jesus makes me laugh. I do not mean this in a bad way..I'm sure that it wasn't intended to be a humorous tune...it just comes across that way for me. I just never would have imagined Cash covering it...(and it makes me think of the 80's). Lineman is beautiful...haunting...makes me think of the west..the sunset...everything that brought allure to "the man in black".

Cash for a new age,
By
This review is from: Hurt: Personal Jesus (Audio CD)
In the UK the 'Hurt' track has been playing over the last few weeks (Sept/Oct 03), along with the amazing video. I cannot believe that this song has been around since the beginning of this year and we have only discovered it now. The voice has all the pain of 70 years of living, with a beautiful acoustic track. As well as this, Johnny covers the DM song 'Personal Jesus', one of my favourites, and done in a way that reinterprets the lyric in a very personal way.The best tribute that I can pay to the the man in black is that even the young people where I work are talking about 'Hurt' |
