Dino with the country blues,

Dean Martin fans will applaud this long awaited release of some of his recordings from the Reprise years. For those who may have wondered what all the fuss is about, there is plenty here to answer that question. While one can question some of the selections, ( Dino was surely smiling all the way through SINGIN' THE BLUES) he is at his best often enough to make the casual observer see the light! No one including Hank Williams himself has performed a more achingly beautiful version of I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY and the same can be said of Dean's versions on BORN TO LOSE and DETROIT CITY. He also more than equals Ray Price on FOR THE GOOD TIMES. All in all a superb release, that will continue the burgeoning interest of todays generation in this legendary performer. Two quick asides: When Capitol releases Deans version of LITTLE GREEN APPLES run, don't walk, to but it. Also to a previous reviewer, Capitol has released Dean's "Swingin' Down Yonder" album.

Dean does country,

This is a great album. Dean does a great job on many of these country tunes including For the Good Times, Born To Lose, I'm so Lonesome I can Cry, By the Time I get To Phoenix, and Gentle on My Mind. He is definitely an underappreciated country singer.

Dino Adds Flair to Country,
By S.Summerfeld (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hurtin Country Songs (Audio CD)
I hesitated to buy this CD because I'm not a big fan of the country genra. However I was pleased with Dean's interpretation of the old country standards. A highlight, for me , is Gentle on my Mind. Compared to Glenn Campell's version, Dean's takes some of the edge off of a song calling for a smooth approach. Very nice indeed. Highly recommened to all serious fans of Dean Martin.

Dean Martin fans will covet this disc as it contains rare sides of Dean from his Reprise Records era in the 60s and 70s. Controlled by Martin's family trust, these tracks have not made it into the digital age until now. On the down side, there are few exceptional tracks on this 15 track compilation. The liner notes make these tracks seem greater than they are. In actuality, they are pretty standard fare for Martin. With his relaxed style, he typically breezes through most of these songs. There are no surprises here. Not recommended to the casual Martin admirer.

Okay, I was skeptical when I a bought this, and didn't think that it would be that good, but it was Dino, so I thought I'd give it a try.Well, not only can Dino sing country, he can sing it very well and embellish it with a sultriness that can only be described as pure Dino! Can't wait to get my hands on some more country Dino, and anything else that he's recorded!

The "other" Dean Martin,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hurtin Country Songs (Audio CD)
The image most people have of Dean Martin is the tuxedo-clad rat packer, and the guy always singing Italian songs in Jerry Lewis movies. But Dean loved all things southern (come on Capitol, where's the reissue of the long-out-of-print "Swingin' Down Yonder" CD?!) and this CD shows him to be a more-than-adept country pop singer. The production by Nashville bossman Jimmy Bowen is sometimes cluttered but never insincere: its obvious that the parties involved respected this music. And since Dean's pop hits of the 1960s were handled by Bowen (and big hits like "Remember Me" -- which can be found on the recent Greatest Hits CD -- were country songs to begin with)these tracks aren't that different from the Dino everyone bought by the truckload back in the 1960's. Dean's "Release Me" is better than any version out there (sorry Engelbert) and the other songs (country standards all) are worth a listen. Don't expect finger snappin' here: its the "other" Dean Martin and its as cool as a tall drink of branch whiskey and watching the tumbleweeds roll by!

Bought this for one song I couldn't get anywhere else. What a great surprise. While the originals are classics, Dean puts his mark on each song. Glad I bought it!

Dean Martin was not a country singer, but I have always liked his country songs better than the originals. Dean never disappointed me. This is a great album.
