Editorial Reviews

Yet another superb entry in Ace's short series of Expanded Versions of Millie Jackson's original Spring albums.

"Hurts So Good" first appeared in 1973, on the back of Ms. Jackson's Top 3 R&B/Top 30 Pop US success with its title track (her all-time biggest US hit, by the way). Its appearance also marked the first time that Millie recorded in the famous southern soul town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama - where her major subsequent successes "Caught Up" and "Still Caught Up" (both also available in this series) would be recorded in their entirety.

This newly remastered version, from the original Spring album production master, adds a generous six bonus tracks, including a first-ever true stereo mix of Millie's non-album 45 "Breakaway", several very different mixes of some of the album's highlights and two `one take' demos that Millie never recorded `finished' versions of.

Once again issued with the co-operation and participation of Ms. Jackson herself, this is an hour's worth of seminal Millie that no true fan or collector will care to be without. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

I may be a little late, but since I discovered Millie Jackson through her breath-taking "Caught Up" concept album,I am "caught up" with her and I deeply admire her as a singer and songwriter. While Gladys Knight is passionate but somehow too "clean" and Tina Turner can be one-dimensional,Millie Jackson can be both gritty and sensitive, showing defiance and vulnerability that I found extremely attractive (and honest)."It Hurts So Good" was her second LP,recorded in 1973. with a title song being huge hit, thanks to blaxplotation movie "Cleopatra Jones".While first few songs sound curiously like something from Marvin's Gaye "What's Going On" (social comments),eventualy later Millie Jackson explores love themes and therefore she moves further to a sound she became well known.Perhaps the best thing about this album was the fact that it was the start of her collaboration with talented producer Brad Shapiro who took her to famous Muscle Shoals studios (where Aretha,Etta and Wilson recorded their best work) - the music backing was this time much more suitable to her strong, passionate voice than on a debut album and through real down & dirty, funky pre-disco sound Millie shines like a rough diamond.

5.0 out of 5 stars The message doesn't age, November 25, 2000

Alot of the stuff Millie talks about on this record is still going on today! She's always real and upfront with hers. On to my review of this album, from the opening track i knew that I was gonna love this album. I Cry is the 1st track and is very social and political. Probably one of the best on this album. Other standouts are It hurts so good, Good to the very last drop, Love Doctor, Hypocrisy and-of forget it I love the whole album! If your into funked out soul like Issac Hayes, Curtis Mayfeild then this album is for you. And I promise that you'll be hooked on both Millie & the album itself.
