From the Publisher

"At last, someone has provided parents with a fun-filled, non-threatening approach to help children who hold in their bowel movements. Dr. Bennett's book will be a permanent fixture in my waiting room." --Benny Kerzner, M.D., Chairman, Department of Gastroenterology, Children's National Medical Center

"Every child with toilet training trouble should see this book!" -Allison Schonwald, M.D., Pediatrician, Harvard Medical School, Author of the Pocket Idiot's Guide to Potty Training Problems

"It Hurts When I Poop! is a wonderful book. My daughter runs a little show, digestion-wise, and is prone to tummy aches when she holds everything in. Dr. Bennett's story provided her with knowledge about her body, confidence in her intelligence, and a plan to remedy the situation. I heartily recommend Dr. Benntt's smart, playful treatment of a frustrating problem." -Mary Kay Zuravleff, Author of The Bowl is Already Broken

"This is a terrific book that will help children overcome the fears they experience while using the potty. I highly recommend this book and think it will be enthusiastically received by parents and children alike." -Teri Crane, Author of Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day: Proven Secrets of the Potty Pro

Customer Reviews

This is a book about a child who is scared to poop because it hurts!
Roonie
By the third day of reading the book (several times a day), she wanted to sit on her potty and give it a try.
M. Davis
The book ends abruptly after that, but not until it gives irrelevant stuff that does not apply to the child.

My daughter has had a poo poo problem for three years and FINALLY!!!!.....I purchased the book and from the first time I read it to her she started to relate to Ryan. She wanted me to read her the book at least five times a night and when she was on the toilet. People don't understand the late nights crying on the toilet for three hours at a time unless they have been through something like this. My daughter was in pain every day and Ryan has the exact symptoms as my daughter had. I really wanted to thank the author of this book. I also purchased one for my daughters doctor. If your child has this problem please buy this book it really has done wonders for my daughter and the family.

This book provided more progress for us in 1 week than anything else did in almost 2 years! Our daughter is almost 4 and has dealt with "withholding issues" for almost 2 years since being constipated once when she was two. We got this book last week for her and she has actually pooped in the potty 5 times now for the first time in her life! For the last 2 years she has been on the prescription stool softener MiraLAX which has prevented further constipation but never caused her to stop being afraid of letting her BM's out. She has been almost deathly afraid of pooping in her pull-up and even more so in the potty. We tried everything and became so frustrated with seeing our precious girl go through such self-induced agony as she held her BM's in on a daily basis. I felt hopeless in being able to reach her ... but thankfully, Ryan did, the little boy character in this book. She related instantly to him as he went through the same agony as she did. As Ryan learned through a story from his doctor followed by a little anatomy lesson, our daughter learned. It seemed to ease her tension almost immediately. By the third day of reading the book (several times a day), she wanted to sit on her potty and give it a try. She was successful the first time and has since been successful almost each day. I can't tell you the relief and pride that she has in herself now and of course her parents too. I highly recommend this book for any child who is fearful of letting out his/her poop. I hope it works out as well for others as it did for us.

When you have been through 2 years of poop problems, and not knowing what else to do, this book is the answer. It describes perfectly how my daughter felt, it was if she wrote it. I love this book, it is her favorite book. Some tomes we don't talk about these kind of this because we are ashamed, but now with this book it is easy to help in this matter. I am so thankful I found this book, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book was perfect for my son who has been having trouble pooping for a few months. He totally relates to the main character Ryan. I think that this book together with a prescribed laxative from our dr. solved our son's problem. Prior to this, he would go five days with no poop. Now he is pooping everyday. Wonderful!!

This is for other moms and dads going through torture watching your child hold in their bowel movements. When the book came, we opened it and read it right away. My 4.5 year old daughter was captivated by the words. It was written for the child, about the child, and the story is about another child with the same issues. As we read along, she would say, "like me" after each part. She could relate to the problem of it hurting, that she holds it in thinking it will go away, that she too squeezes her butt muscles, that her belly hurts too, etc. She couldn't believe that another child had had the same thing before her, and this made her so interested in continueing to read. She listened so closely to every word. She asked questions about what things meant or what was happening and why! My daugther got so excited about eating the right foods to help her poop, and was thrilled to eat them, even though I had been trying these for years, and she would refuse and leave them on the plate. She decided to take control of her body after just one read. She pooped on the potty hours later. Then she had a pullup on that evening and tried to get to toilet, but didn't make it, but was letting all her poop come out. It was a ton. The next day, she was successful on the potty for 5 trips, and we celebrated. The next day two regular movements and she is trying to understand why more isn't coming. Having to explain to her how "dirty her house was" like in the book and now that she is letting it all go, there isn't so much and it feels so much better. she will say, "No more tummy aches!" We are still doing great and pray for continued success. We pull the book out just to "check" on foods, but really as a daily reminder in a way she loves. I think we really have it all figured out now.Read more ›

We've been having many of the same issues as previous reviewers and were thrilled to find this book. My 3.5 year old son was very excited to get the book "special delivery" so we read it right away. It was really neat how the character Ryan mirrored my son in every way. It was easy for us to relate to Ryan. However, I was seriously disappointed by the ending of the book! There is no resolution to Ryan's problem. The book ends with the Dr. giving Ryan a plan. Without showing Ryan actually conquering his fears, this book actually didn't help us at all. I think it might have if we could show him, "Look, Ryan did it, you can too!"
Truly a disappointment, given how much we enjoyed the rest of the book.
