5.0 out of 5 stars It hurts when I poop
My daughter has had a poo poo problem for three years and FINALLY!!!!.....I purchased the book and from the first time I read it to her she started to relate to Ryan. She wanted me to read her the book at least five times a night and when she was on the toilet. People don't understand the late nights crying on the toilet for three hours at a time unless they have been...

She wanted me to read her the book at least five times a night and when she was on the toilet. People don't understand the late nights crying on the toilet for three hours at a time unless they have been through something like this. My daughter was in pain every day and Ryan has the exact symptoms as my daughter had. I really wanted to thank the author of this book. I also purchased one for my daughters doctor. If your child has this problem please buy this book it really has done wonders for my daughter and the family.

When you have been through 2 years of poop problems, and not knowing what else to do, this book is the answer. It describes perfectly how my daughter felt, it was if she wrote it. I love this book, it is her favorite book. Some tomes we don't talk about these kind of this because we are ashamed, but now with this book it is easy to help in this matter. I am so thankful I found this book, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was really neat how the character Ryan mirrored my son in every way. It was easy for us to relate to Ryan. However, I was seriously disappointed by the ending of the book! There is no resolution to Ryan's problem. The book ends with the Dr. giving Ryan a plan. Without showing Ryan actually conquering his fears, this book actually didn't help us at all. I think it might have if we could show him, "Look, Ryan did it, you can too!"
Truly a disappointment, given how much we enjoyed the rest of the book.

This book provided more progress for us in 1 week than anything else did in almost 2 years! Our daughter is almost 4 and has dealt with "withholding issues" for almost 2 years since being constipated once when she was two. We got this book last week for her and she has actually pooped in the potty 5 times now for the first time in her life! For the last 2 years she has been on the prescription stool softener MiraLAX which has prevented further constipation but never caused her to stop being afraid of letting her BM's out. She has been almost deathly afraid of pooping in her pull-up and even more so in the potty. We tried everything and became so frustrated with seeing our precious girl go through such self-induced agony as she held her BM's in on a daily basis. I felt hopeless in being able to reach her ... but thankfully, Ryan did, the little boy character in this book. She related instantly to him as he went through the same agony as she did. As Ryan learned through a story from his doctor followed by a little anatomy lesson, our daughter learned. It seemed to ease her tension almost immediately. By the third day of reading the book (several times a day), she wanted to sit on her potty and give it a try. She was successful the first time and has since been successful almost each day. I can't tell you the relief and pride that she has in herself now and of course her parents too. I highly recommend this book for any child who is fearful of letting out his/her poop. I hope it works out as well for others as it did for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my son!, January 11, 2008
This review is from: It Hurts When I Poop!: A Story for Children Who Are Scared to Use the Potty (Hardcover)
This book was perfect for my son who has been having trouble pooping for a few months. He totally relates to the main character Ryan. I think that this book together with a prescribed laxative from our dr. solved our son's problem. Prior to this, he would go five days with no poop. Now he is pooping everyday. Wonderful!!

I wish I would have had this book a few years ago for our middle child, he too had "poop" issues. My friends could not even begin to understand the torment we went through weekly knowing that our son and now our youngest daughter - needed to poop. It was a week long battle of "bumping" as we called it (holding it in), dirty underwear, screaming fits, suppositories, yelling, bribing, etc...

Our son has somewhat outgrown the problem, although he only poops every two or three days. However, it is not the ordeal it once was. But we still have a four year old daughter going through the same torment. This book was an INSTANT success, I'm talking overnight. I wish I could pinpoint the thing that made the difference, but part of me has to believe seeing it on paper that another child "just like me" has the same problem, that it's okay and there are solutions. She has pooped a total of six times without much problem...we sit her on the toilet every other night and read her the book (of course at her request). My husband and I almost fell off our chair when the other day she was making motions like she needed to poop and he asked her - She said "yes" and proceeded to the toilet like it was the normal thing to do. It almost brings me to tears as I write it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Don't hesitate to get this book, it WORKS!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book -- Worked like a charm!, May 28, 2010

This review is from: It Hurts When I Poop!: A Story for Children Who Are Scared to Use the Potty (Hardcover)
Our son is almost 4.5 years old and we had been having tons of problems with him going #2 on the potty. He would hold it, get constipated, get a rash because of it, etc. It was just a vicious cycle that we couldn't break. We tried pretty much everything but he just had no interest in sitting on the potty and insisted he wear a pull-up. We read this book to him ONE time and he said he wanted to try sitting on the potty like Ryan in the book does. The book has some pretty detailed pictures about what happens on the inside of your body which helped our son to understand. It's been about 3-4 weeks since we received this book, and our son is now poopingo on the potty every day, sometimes twice!! I have nothing but great things to say about this book and would highly recommend it to anyone that is having a hard time with this. thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a book about being scared of the toilet..., May 18, 2011

This book is NOT about being scared of using the toilet. This is a book about a child who is scared to poop because it hurts! If you are looking for a book about toilet training, this is NOT your book. If your child has issues with hard, overly big poops that cause them to shake, shiver and cry, even to the point of rectal bleeding, this IS the book for you and your child!

When my kiddo was initally potty trained at age 2 1/2, everything was fine. Then, in Kindergarten when he went to school all day (8:30-3 PM), he refused to poop in any toilet that wasn't his, or when I wasn't there. Thus, the poop problems began.
He is now in first grade and he will hold it for several days until it starts to come out on his own. I brought this book BACK out (I bought it when he was potty training, but it wasn't really pertinent then) and now he totally relates to the main character, Ryan. Things are getting better; we have a point of reference to discuss now when I remind him that he should at least try to poop or when it's time to eat vegetables and fruit.

If your child has poop issues, get this book. IF YOU ARE INITIALLY POTTY TRAINING, DON'T BOTHER.

5.0 out of 5 stars This really helped my child get past that last barrier., June 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My daughter used to be so frightened to go at school for fear that she'd have a painful #2 in front of her friends, so she'd hold it, get constipated, wait for the pull-up at home, disappear, and then announce that she needed to be cleaned... This book helped to open up our conversation on the topic and after a few days she started working through the hurtful ones with mommy's help. She still loves when I read it to her and sometimes when I can tell she's struggling on the potty, she'll draw pictures with her finger on the wall to show me what's going on - just like the book! :) This was very much worth the purchase price for me!

There are not many books to choose from on this topic, with that said, this book fully addresses the issue of poop withholding. The story is a bit dry and very detailed, so it was too much for my 2 1/2 year old daughter to comprehend. It is probably better for the 4+ age group.
