Can't help lovin' dat man...,

This review is from: Husband Hunting Made Easy : And Other Miracles for the Modern Gay Man (Paperback)
The first thing that attracted me to the book was the back cover. I was browsing in the book store and saw HHME face down. It was interesting to see two men arm and arm, so it was picked up and skimmed through. "Husband Hunting" is very specific as to what a guy should be looking for when he's out searching for that significant other. Price writes the book using humor(the first words of the book explain how with three sons, his mother would never have expected a son-in-law) and incorporating past experiences, both good and bad. HHME takes the single gay man by the hand and guides him step by step through the journey for "Mr. Right". Although I'm not ready to start looking for a life partner(18), I know that I will reread this book when the time arrives. This is the "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" for the modern gay man.

Self-help books are usually anathema for me, but this one is a clear exception. Written with uncanny clarity, humor, and seriousness, the book tackles a host of situations and circumstances with a no-nonsense, clear-headed, and right-minded approach. One might quibble with one or two things, but overall, I've not encountered such a refreshing examination of the "gay" lifestyle and its orientation toward making sincere and secure commitments. It's breezy in style, hence there is little condenscension about some more significant issues (esp. when it comes to HIV and all its consequences). Had it attempted to answer every piccadilo, however, it wouldn't be as fun, entertaining, or as overall informative as it turned out to be. This book is an excellent resource for all gay men, offering provocative (and almost always true) observations about being gay (something most of us have not been taught). It is especially provocative and useful for those serious about making commitments.

I'd purchased this and "The Priciples" at the same time. "The Priciples" is much smaller, so I read it first, and almost ran screaming back to heterosexuality in fear! (Seriously.) The other book is about trickery, deceipt, and stupidity. Husband Hunting Made Easy, on the other hand is intelligent, well written, sometimes amusing, and seems to be just good advice in general. I haven't found a husband yet, and not really looking too hard just yet, so I can't say HHME works, but it's a fun read with some good advice for the inexperienced gay dater.

This is a great book for someone who's just starting on the daring search for a husband. It's laid out in good clean format and written in a concise forward manner. Even with that said the author remembers that any book like this needs to keep it's perspective - and it's sense of humor. And the sense of humor is what keeps this book moving along. The advice is all pretty much common sense but the author puts it in a form that's easy to digest (as opposed to advice from your friends which is...). There are some very cute and funny bits about how to put up with your future husband's little habits. There's even a section on handling his love of Barbra, or whatever diva he chooses to worship. While this is a great book, the reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because it's almost like reading the Clif's Notes version of a heavier book. It leaves you wanting something more in depth.

Patrick Price Surpasses All His Contemporaries,

This review is from: Husband Hunting Made Easy : And Other Miracles for the Modern Gay Man (Paperback)
At last, a book on gay relationships that does not insult its audience with advice on tricking and bathhouse ettiquette. At last, a book on gay relationships with a sense of humor. Only Betty Berzon's "Permanent Partners" comes close in the field. Mr. Price writes with a sense of humor that makes us laugh and cringe at our past mistakes. He also writes with a common sense point of view that lets the reader know he is as serious about finding the love of his life as he hopes that reader is. He strongly discourages sex on the first date, he asks the reader to examine himself, and he admonishes anyone so shallow as to make life altering decisions based on an outfit. His writing is extremely readable, looks to the future instead of instant gratification, and is immediately encouraging. Yes, it is somewhat light reading, but there is a heart of gold behind the words and a genuine wealth of knowledge that we know, but seem to constantly ignore when we step outside our front doors

Price has written a witty and informative how-to for the modern gay man. And don't worry, there's nothing dryly academic here...the book is wry, occassionally bitchy, and altogether forthright. Filled with fun quizzes, hillarious illustrations & photos, and lots of advice on what to do and who to avoid, it's the perfect handbook for anyone who's ever had a husband or even wanted one!

I bought "Husband Hunting" 2 days ago (after an emotional soiree with an old fling) and it not only made me feel SO much better, but I think it may have changed my life forever! I know what you're thinking, drama queen (a little scary), but HHME provides such a sensibility and really reminded me to keep a level head. I am by no means looking for a husband yet (I'm only 17), but this book will definitely help keep those shady creeps at bay. Full of healthy humor and genuinly good advice, I reccomend it highly to all single gay men!

Sad, Bad, and not Glad (that I read this book),

This book is a pitifully shallow and degrading analysis of something that is so important to so many. A true disappointment. On the other hand, if you find yourself liking everything that everyone else likes - in other words, if you're a trite cliche - then this book might be for you. I mean, what kind of a serious author lists a reason for having a partner of, "He'll tell you when you're clothes don't match" or "he'll instantly double your CD collection." If anything, this book helped me understand why I have a hard time engaging in idle chatter about uninteresting nothingness. Maybe it really is them and not me.
