Book Description

Clinical psychologist and radio host Dr. Steven Craig offers a revolutionary book that helps couples identify the six different people they need to become over the course of their relationship in order to grow together rather than apart.

Throughout his career as a marriage counselor, Dr. Craig has identified a common thread in strained relationships: the belief that change should be avoided at all costs. Determined to destroy this harmful myth, Dr. Craig presents a concept as straightforward as it is original: Marriages don’t fail when people change; they fail when people don’t change.

In 6 Husbands, Dr. Craig divides the typical marriage into six stages, outlining both the common misconceptions and opportunities for growth at each level. From the earliest stage of becoming the right person for your spouse in the new marriage; to thinking and acting like a team; to adjusting to the dynamics of parenthood; to caring for older children and elderly parents; to adapting to the empty nest; and then to growing into the golden years and becoming a dependable companion, Dr. Craig offers new communication tools, rules for intimacy, checklists, and assessments designed to inspire change.

The 6 Husbands Every Wife Should Have will revitalize readers’ notions of marriage and turn it into an ongoing activity that husband and wife can conquer actively—together.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Advice February 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The 6 Husbands Every Wife Should Have by Dr. Steven Craig This is a very helpful book for any stage of marriage. Marriages have various crises that are typical of all marriages, but when a couple is going through it, they feel as if they are the only ones and they must solve it themselves. Dr. Craig, himself a counselor, gives excellent steps for each stage of life crisis, gives examples and how to solve them. The stages are 1. The romantic early period when each partner is the perfect one to fulfill dreams. Stage 2 is yound married life when the two must pull together to build a strong unit of their home. Stage 3 is early parenthood when everything shifts for both husband and wife and each needs the understanding, help, and support of the other. Stage 4 is learning how to be a family and who is in charge of which duties to prevent chaos, meltdown, and disintegration of the family unit. Stage 5 is empty nest when marriages must be revitalized now that the couple is again alone together. Stage 6 is the golden years when bodies begin to have difficulties and minds also, and each partner must grow more into a trustworthy companion. The book is excellent in offering helps and solutions for specific problems at each stage of life to make marriages grow stronger through the years instead of breaking up when problems arise because change is always occurring and must be an instrument of growth

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book February 14, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This book isn't about the "fluffy" stuff you often hear about regarding keeping your relationship alive, but it's about the real stuff that makes a relationship successful. When I read this book, I chuckled through some parts that were so real life, and learned so much in other parts. For anyone involved in a relationship, thinking about marriage, or married, this is a must have book. Save yourself all kinds of relationship trouble in advance by reading this book. This is a much cheaper purchase than therapy sessions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great marriage and relationship guide August 13, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Anyone in a serious relationship and especially anticipating marriage or having marital issues should read this book. We all change and if we don't, we are in trouble. Still we often hear the "You aren't the person I married." As Dr. Craig points out, we would hope not as change is a necessity as we spend many years with our partner in life. I especially liked the real life stories that brought home the advice as well as the "here's what to say to start the conversation with your spouse" ideas. Readers will see themselves in many of the scenarios in this book. It is easy to read, interesting and informative on how to have a better, long time relationship with your spouse. It should be required reading for newly married couples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for comprehensive marriage support September 16, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I work with marriage issues. People are living longer and marriages are lasting longer than ever before. The current growing time for divorce is about 38-40 years of marriage. It is extremely important to understand and be able to work with the phases of a longer marriage. I always tell people you are going to marry the same person five or six times during the course of your marriage because as circumstances change as you age, you have to adapt. That is what this book helps you do. Great book

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Married Couple Should Read This Book! December 5, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The BEST book I have ever read about how to have a successful marriage, full of excellent advice, sample conversations, and HUMOR! I have been married for 48 years, very happily, and I learned many useful suggestions from this book. I have given one copy to a couple being married on December 27 and will give another copy to a couple who married a few months ago. Cannot think of any other gift more useful over the long run,
