A modern razor sharp tale of dysfunctional coupling., August 20, 2006
This review is from: Husbands and Other Lovers (Paperback)
This page turner portrays the sordid personality of Robert Agnew, sociopath, and his alcoholic brother James.
Robert is conniving, cold, ruthless, obsessive compulsive and abusing with women, sadistic is the word that best describes him.
All his women have suffered hard core humiliation and nerve wrecking fear. Robert is capable of anything especially if his daughter Araminta is concerned.
James and Susannah battle his addictions to the bottle and his ever present lying; their love life is cut short due to his drinking and then his own recovery.
This is a nicely woven story of love, passion, current affairs between men and wives, as well as parenting.
I was intrigued and enthralled by the depth of Varley's men and women characters. Having read Wives and Lovers, her first novel, I must say I recommend this one even more. I found it more cutting edge, fast paced, and unexpected.
