Book Description

Thorndike Core March 2009
When a spymaster proposes marriage as a cover, it might be madness for a lady to indulge in...

A HUSBAND'S WICKED WAYS

Bestselling author Jane Feather beguiles with this sparkling story of the alluring secrets hidden behind the elegance of Regency London, when a lovely young woman discovers the danger...and delight...of risking everything for love.

Aurelia Farnham believes she is happy living in London's stylish Cavendish Square. But with her friends Livia and Cornelia both married now, Aurelia is the only one still husbandless, and sometimes she longs for more. Then Colonel Sir Greville Falconer storms into her life, delivering a letter from her late husband, a war hero, which reveals he was a spy -- the colonel's spy. Now Greville needs Aurelia to continue the patriotic mission and partner him as he exposes a ring of Spanish spies who have infiltrated London society.

The attentions of the charismatic Greville excite Aurelia as his mock courtship blurs the line between pretense and reality. When the simmering attraction between them ignites into passion and the danger of Aurelia's double life escalates, Greville insists on marriage as the best way to protect her. Now Aurelia realizes she has more than shadowy antagonists to fear, for she's lost her heart to a dashing spymaster who will one day slip away as suddenly as he appeared....

From Booklist

Widow Aurelia Farnham wishes for a better life while raising her precocious daughter. With dreams of economic security, she thrives in the social whirl of London society, thanks to friends who have made love matches with aristocratic men who work undercover in England’s war with France. Then Colonel Sir Greville Falconer tells her that her husband did not die three years ago; he died recently as a spy under the colonel’s direction. Now the colonel wants Aurelia to become his new partner in flushing out Spanish spies who are insinuating themselves in the ton. With the prospect of excitement and funds for her independence, she agrees, never expecting that their cover story, a feigned courtship, would become something more. Or has it? Will Aurelia ever know Greville’s true feelings? This dynamic conclusion to Feather’s Wicked trilogy (A Wicked Gentleman, 2007; To Wed a Wicked Prince, 2008) is filled with recurring quirky characters, truly evil villains, and a fearless heroine who is definitely an equal to her hero. --Patty Engelmann --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Absolute struggle to get through...2.5 Stars, May 14, 2009

I wonder if I read the same book as the other reviewers. This book was soooo boring for me. I kept waiting for it to get better but it really didn't. I hardly felt a connection between the hero and heroine and their romance and the whole story in general was quite drab. Easily a couple of hundred pages could have been removed from this book...too much unnecessary writing - conversations and descriptions not essential to the story that made it even more boring than it was already. I liked the characters and they had the potential for a good story, but it just wasn't there for me. I put this down so many times and read other books while trying to get through this one. Obviously, from the other reviews there are some who really enjoyed this, but I cannot recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Romance, April 13, 2010
Well, the beginning started out good... It felt like there was something there between Greville and Aurelia. But somewhere along the line it just kind of fell. I'm coming to the conclusion that Jane Feather does not know how to write romance.

I, too, felt that at times I struggled with this book, skimming the pages. But when I came to the part when they first made love, I gave up on the spot. What kind of crap was that? She didn't even write about it!

"They showered, after making love for hours until they were too tired..." or something like that...

This is supposed to be a romance story? No way.

And, my God, does Jane Feather really know how to get off topic. She went on and on and on and on and on about things of absolutely no importance whatsoever. It was so boring, and quite annoying. She doesn't really put much feeling in her books. If you're looking for romance, skip her. Look for Sabrina Jeffries, or Nicole Jordan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Conflict, April 21, 2009
Typical that I would come to the trilogy of the Cavendish Square Ladies with the last book before reading the first two, but it was an absolutely wonderful read and so much better than a typical final book in a trilogy. What made it great was the intense conflict when a widow finds out her husband was not the man she thought he was and yet is expeceted help her country by helping the man who took her husband away from her. Add to this a hero whose cold exterior, which has brought him and his country many successes as a spy, is melted by a woman who he wants only as an able bodied partener in his next mission, but is quick to thaw when his lust turns to love.

Ms Feather has quite an intense romance here and though the book ends in the typical HEA there is nothing typical in the journey to get the reader to the last page Though the ending is a bit abrupt, tying up all the lose ends of the friendship of Nell, Ellie and Liv, one can only hope with delightful Franny, Stevie, Susannah, Zoe and William maybe there will be a next generation to look forward to.

A HUSBAND'S WICKED WAYS is romance at its best, sure to statisfy the most descriminating reader. I couldn't put it down.
