5.0 out of 5 stars Unique twist on a classic bedtime story
Hush, Baby Ghostling caught my eye right away. My 4-year-old really enjoys rhyming books though he gets easily bored if they are too simplistic. His favorite books have a common theme and that is the story within is unique from anything else he has ever read. This book fits that bill perfectly. I could tell he was very intrigued and a bit confused that this common bedtime...

3.0 out of 5 stars Drawings like Caspar but lacking something of its charm
I originally ordered this book because the cover art reminded me of the "Caspar (Casper?) the Friendly Ghost" books from my childhood. In general, I thought the book was cute and sweet, a good Halloween book for the younger kids wanting a Halloween story that's not too scary. Maybe it's my own sentimentality, but my only complaint was that this story didn't have quite the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique twist on a classic bedtime story, August 20, 2009
This review is from: Hush, Baby Ghostling (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Hush, Baby Ghostling caught my eye right away. My 4-year-old really enjoys rhyming books though he gets easily bored if they are too simplistic. His favorite books have a common theme and that is the story within is unique from anything else he has ever read. This book fits that bill perfectly. I could tell he was very intrigued and a bit confused that this common bedtime routine was reversed. The story is about a baby ghostling at bedtime, and a common tale unfolds in a very original way as his mommy ghost tries to soothe his fears about the light and says she will "leave the darkness on." He hears strange and scary sounds and thinks they are children playing and laughing outside. Again, his mother soothes his fears and tells him to think of monsters and nightmares. It really fits very well and was an entertaining read for all of us. It continues to be one of his most frequently read books and I'm so glad I picked it up. The illustrations are very nicely done, definitely spooky but not too scary. Just enough to portray the life of baby ghostling and illustrate the many differences between his world and ours. Recommended for all the little readers in your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Cute Book! Makes A Great Halloween Gift For Your Childling!, August 20, 2009
This review is from: Hush, Baby Ghostling (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Hush, Baby Ghostling is an adorable Halloween themed children's book with great illustrations throughout and the writing/rhyming syntax is easy to read aloud and wonderful to hear. The book is about a baby ghostling that has trouble going to sleep (during the daytime hours, naturally). Baby ghostling is scared of the daylight, songs and laughter, and cute blonde headed "childlings". Mama ghost tucks ghostling into bed and promises dark scary dreams, haunting noises and moonlight coming soon.

All in all a sweet book, especially if you love the season of Halloween and all things scary like I do!

Unpleasant Dreams...

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable Bedtime Story, July 23, 2009
This review is from: Hush, Baby Ghostling (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This book is adorable and the story gives the classic bedtime story a different twist. What if your baby were a ghost?? Mama ghost puts her baby to sleep and tells him to dream of scary things. Don't be afraid of the light....i'll keep it dark for you. Baby thimnks he sees a scary kid and mama ghost tells him not to worry. Kids aren't real, they're make believe. The text is rhyming and the illustrations are simple. A good story for kids who are afraid of nighttime ghosts, to show that ghosts are probably scared of us too. Younger children might be confused and think this proves ghosts are real but it's perfect for the two and older set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable!!, July 23, 2009
This review is from: Hush, Baby Ghostling (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This book came in the mail today and my 2 year old saw me opening it. He likes books and as soon as he saw it he yelled BOOK!!
He ran over to sit by me and at first we just thumbed through and looked at the pictures. Before his nap I started reading it to him and he really likes it! He saw the pictures of the ghostling crying and said "baby cry". He really liked the book, he wanted to read it again so we'll read it again tonight before bed.

It's a cute story and not at all creepy... more sweet than anything else!

My 3 year old son loves this book.
The illustrations are gorgeous and eye catching. The rhyming style doesn't sound forced and reads incredibly well.
It's not 'halloween' themed at all, making it perfect for any time reading.
If you have a child that is into monsters, this is the perfect, (non scary), ghost and goblin filled bed time book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect book to read to children of all ages, November 29, 2009
This review is from: Hush, Baby Ghostling (Hardcover)
I absolutely loved the book Hush, Baby Ghostling. I felt that the artwork was beautifully done and that the story was very unique. How many children are afraid of the dark and monsters? This book tells a story of a monster afraid of children. What a great twist! I feel that it could help children that are afraid of the dark with their fears.

We have read it time and time again. It is one of my favorite books. The author does an amazing job of story telling in all her books. I highly recommend this book and all her other works.

This book is a great book to read all year long and I plan on keeping it close so that I can read it over and over again throughout the year. I hope she writes many more books in the future as I look forward to seeing what she writes next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Cute "Opposite" bedtime story for your little Ghostling!, October 16, 2009

This bedtime story tells of a typical bedtime routine for a little Ghostling - so everything is the opposite of a typical child's...Ghostlings go to bed when it's morning and wake when it's night...

"Hush, Baby Ghostling
the haunting hour is past.
The bats have ceased their swooping
and the dawn is coming fast."...

"Dear Baby Ghostling.
You're tucked in nice and tight.
I'll leave some darkness in the hall
if you're scared of the light."

The story is such a sweet tale of how much parents care for their little ones and want them to have a good night's sleep. Hush, Baby Ghostling is rhyming read for halloween or any bed time!!!

I was a little concerned this book would be scary for my just-turned-3 daughter. A quick read through of my own allayed those worries, and Hush is simple and fun enough for even the youngest audiences. Andrea Beaty's quirky spin on bumps in the night is both approachable to youngsters and fun for the parents. The meter and rhyme flows easily, and Pascal Lemaitre's gentle illustrations are both gorgeous and heartwarming. Like Little Pea, this is a fun spin of a story that earns it's place among our favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Afraid of the daytime..., September 17, 2009
This review is from: Hush, Baby Ghostling (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is a cute little book about a baby ghost who is afraid of the day. I think it's a nice way to show kids perspective. It gives them a chance to imagine how another's child might think and feel who is different from themselves. It also might make a good book for a kid who is afraid of the dark .

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Sure What I Was Expecting... (a review of Hush, Baby Ghostling), September 17, 2009
This review is from: Hush, Baby Ghostling (Hardcover)
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I saw this book staring out at me from our library's New Arrival Shelf. To be frank I wasn't sure that the baby ghost-thing wasn't going to put me off from reading this to my children, but I had heard some buzz about this book and decided to give it a try.

Well, it's absolutely cute. And while the drawings are sweet it's the clever lyrics and concepts that caught our attention. The idea is that it's bedtime and Mama-ghost is putting her darling down to sleep. What follows ought to sound very familiar to most of us-- the usual obstacles arise, and consequently the usual assurances follow. Only with ghosts, you see, everything is sort of twisted around. Baby goes to sleep when the sun begins to rise. Baby also wants the "darkness" left on.

The author, Andrea Beaty, gives us all of this story with very clever and well done verses. Here's a sample so you can judge for yourself.

Hush,
Baby Ghostling.
The haunting hour is past.
The bats have ceased their swooping
and the dawn is coming fast.

So nestle safe beside me in our happy haunted home,
and dream a dream of darkness
where the wild monsters roam.

Talking Points :::
Sweet artwork takes second stage to a creative lyrics that make for a GOOD Read-a-Loud. This book would make a fine read any time, but especially good for bedtime (during Halloween or elsewise).

Nothing scary if the whole idea of ghosts doesn't bother your child. The book ends sweetly with "I Love You."
