Book Description

2 and up
Hush, little horsie,
Asleep on the moor.
Your mama is close—
That’s what mamas are for.

Mama horses around the world promise to watch over their little ones as the foals frolic and play and eventually fall asleep in this soothing bedtime story. Young horse lovers will drift off with Ruth Sanderson’s stunning horses in their minds and the promise of their own parents’ enduring love in their hearts.

Award-winning author Jane Yolen has written the New York Times bestselling How Do Dinosaurs . . . series and Owl Moon, winner of the Caldecott Medal. In Hush, Little Horsie, she has dreamed up a lovely rhyming read-aloud for a mother and child to snuggle up with.

This gorgeous picture book is perfect for horse lovers big and small—and for mothers in need of a good bedtime story.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–In this gentle picture book, a variety of mares stand guard as their foals and fillies play, run, leap, and finally sleep. From farmyards to the plains to the seashore to the moors, the horses are introduced in simple rhyme. In each case, readers are reassured that the mothers will always take care of their babies and the final lines, “she'll watch when you leap/And when you are tired,/She'll watch as your sleep,” are repeated at the end of each section. The book ends with a human mother and her daughter nestled beneath blankets at bedtime, reading stories and preparing for sleep. The girl drifts off, content with the knowledge that her mother is close and will always stand watch as she sleeps. Sanderson's lush and lovely paintings are an ideal match for the reflective text. With text and illustrations as tender as a lullaby, this picture book is ideal for bedtime sharing.–Shawn Brommer, South Central Library System, Madison, WI. (c) Copyright 2010. She has never forgotten the feeling of riding such powerful, beautiful, and well-trained steeds.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect bedtime story!, October 5, 2010
This review is from: Hush, Little Horsie (Hardcover)
The perfect bedtime story! Gentle rhyme and absolutely beautiful illustrations of horse mamas and their foals bedding down for the night. Grow sleepy as each mama encourages her little one to drift to sleep while the rhyme repeats (with some variation) inducing a peaceful, secure feeling. - Biblio Reads Children's Book Review

I got this book from the library and just had to buy it for my daughter who loves horses. The illustrations are beautiful with all of our favorite horse breeds and a lovely, motherly, message to boot.
