Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS—Following the rhythm and rhyme of "Hush Little Baby," a young girl sings a lullaby to her toy bear: "Hush little polar bear./Sleep in the snow,/and dream of the places/where sleeping bears go." As the two of them drift off to sleep, they dream of sailing the high seas, chasing butterflies, bouncing through cow pastures, creeping through a cave, swinging from a vine, and so on until, soaring through the sky, they return home to cuddle in bed. The richly textured spreads are bright and imaginative, perfectly complementing the simple, lyrical text. Begging to be sung, this will be a natural choice for bedtime or teddy-bear-themed storyhours.—Rachel Kamin, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park, IL

Hush Little Polar Bear is a sweet book that follows a polar bear on his adventures. While the story doesn't follow the traditional "Momma's going to buy you" model that you would expect the poetry still fits well with the traditional melody making it easy to sing. My students loved it.

I recommend this book for kids from 0-6

I went with the boardbook version of this book for my nephew, who is 1 year and 3 months old. Figured this would allow him to easily turn the pages and withstand his toddler wrath!

The book's quality is excellent all around! More specifically, the pages have beautifully crafted art, the story is sweet, and the physical quality of the book is a lot better than I expected it would be.

Overall, a great product and I am highly satisfied with my choice of purchase!

My son loves this story. The illustrations are lovely and the story is perfect for bedtime -- quieting, gentle, and sweet. He always rest his head against me as we read it and when we get to the last page he says "Night-night!' to the bear and the little girl.

My sons favorite book. Loves to act out the story as part of our going to bed ritual. Love the story and the pictures. Had to purchase a second book because the first one was so loved.

If you're a fan of the ever-so-charming farm tale "Hurry! Hurry" by Eve Bunting, you may be surprised to learn that the illustrator of that book, Jeff Mack, is also the author of this one -- but what a delightful surprise!

The two books have nothing in common other than the fantastic illustrations by Mr. Mack. However, unlike "Hurry! Hurry!" in which every page is a vibrant explosion of primary colors (not surprising given the farm theme), "Hush Little Polar Bear" is more subdued in its restraint use of color (again not surprising given the subject matter: white polar bear and black night-time sky). And unlike "Hurry! Hurry!", which barely had a dozen words total, each page of "Hush Little Polar Boar" flows with lyrical verse perfect for lulling little ones to sleep.

As an added bonus, my 2-year-old daughter loves "finding" the boats and other small details sprinkled throughout the pages. Without question, this is a great addition to any baby/toddler's library!

A Christmas gift from Grandma, this has been one of my son's very favorite bedtime books for about 5 months now (he's 17 months). I was surprised because I had never heard of it before. What a great find. The words are calming and rhythmic. The story and illustrations are adventurous. The polar bear travels from the sea, to the beach, a marsh, a meadow, a cave, a waterfall, a jungle, a desert, a mountain peak (my favorite), then flying home and snuggling up in bed. We've read it so much that we've memorized it and I sometimes just recite the words of the book to him as he drifts off to sleep. Love it.

Hush Little Polar Bear is whimsical, rhyming picturebook following the imagination of a young girl as she dreams about the magical adventures worldwide of her plush polar bear toy. "Land on the beach, / and then follow a trail. // Wade through a marsh / where the tall grasses grow, / where butterflies flutter / and warm breezes blow." The soft, vibrant color illustrations add the perfect touch to this gentle storybook, excellent for reading aloud to little ones before bedtime.

A great poem and wonderful illustrations, what more can you ask for?! I have never written a review because nothing is really good enough for my five star, but this sure is, actually it exceeds 5 stars if there is such a category for me to rate! It would be tough to find another book to match this one. Mr. Jeff Mack, thank you for such a great book! BTW, when is your next creation due? Anxiously waiting here... :)
