They Omitted the Negro Spiritual by Jennifer Bynum,
This review is from: Hustle & Flow (Clean) (Audio CD)
Why on earth doesn't the soundtrack contain the Negro Spiritual: "Change Mah Name" or "Changed Muh Name"by Jennifer Bynum [Green]. She performs the song in a pivotal moment in the film and merges, with excellence, an operatic element that is sheerly captivating. They are wholly remiss in not compiling this soundtrack differently, so as to inconspicuously admit this into the body of music offered on the CD.Valentine Nwanze

licensing problems?,
By
This review is from: Hustle & Flow (Clean) (Audio CD)
What's here is fine, but not all of the soundtrack's tunes are here. Another reviewer complained about a number from the movie not being here, and he has a point, but the song was part of the plot, not technically part of the backing tracks. What I'm referring to is most likely the producers weighing the commercial value of each track against it's licensing cost, and making cuts accordingly. This is a BS policy in most cases. Unless an artist is totally unreasonable in negotiating their music's licensing, every track should be represented. While watching a movie more than once over a short period of time is often -not- a pleasure, a properly done soundtrack can give the listener the pleasure of the movie experience over and over again. For that, we need all of the tunes.

A chance to understand,

First, please explain to me why there is a review of this movie from a child! This is not a movie or soundtrack for children and I find it apalling that there is a review listed here from one.Secondly, to the "critic", and I use the term loosely, who claims that this movie and its soundtrack are ignorant you are showing your own ignorance and lack of intellectual capacity in understanding the purpose of this movie. The truth is that the world is not all beautiful and positive. The truth is that there are places within this country where people have hard lives and that even in these circumstances people still manage to see beyond the negative and fight for a dream. This movie and the soundtrack is inspiring. For those of us who ARE more priveledged it is an oppurtunity to see outsdide the box and allow ourselves to understand another's experience. Whether we like it or not, this is a depiction of what life is really life for individuals who live in these underpriveledged areas. Instead of judging the lifestyle depicted in this move we should be wondering why in a coutry as rich as ours we allow fellow Americans to be forced to live in such a way.

Very disappointed,

"Change Mah Name" was not included on the CD. The song strongly influenced the audience as well as the character, DJ. I would have bought the CD just for that song. Shame on whomever decided against including it.

IGNORANT, IGNORANT, NOT IMPRESSED!,

I stand by my original review of this movie and could care less about other reviews who have referenced my original review with theirs.I'm not saying that ALL black people are ignorant, because I'm black, but what I am saying is there is false/negative stereotype implying that black people are. This movie only reinforce that stereotype. To even put a delivery man and sound technician in the same employment category as a stripper and pimp is ridculous. I think it's obvious this movie and soundtrack is perfect for those who can't see the obvious seperations of those professions. Call a snake a snake, call a dog a dog, this movie and this soundtrack is ignorant. There is nothing positive about it, the music is simplistic at best (and I say this as a musician and producer), lyrically it's mediocre, and despite the cameos by well know rappers such as T.I, Webbie and Eight Ball, the soundtrack stinks! If your form of entertainment is a bunch of chants about guns, sex, drugs, how much money you have, what kind of car you're driving then this soundtrack is perfect for you. Personally, I think it's garbage! Don't waste your money on it.

Where is Jennifer Bynum Green?,

It's funny how this pianoman cat has to pitch himself as a multi-faceted musician/entrepreneur in almost all his reviews so that we'll respect his opinion more. Whatever helps you sleep at night, kidd. I think you're looking at this movie from the wrong angle. The premise is people who come from nothing and work hard to become something. Regardless of where they started and where they ended up, it's inspiring for those trying to do something with their lives - bonus to the cats who can relate to the story in the SLIGHTEST. You can't exactly start a movie like this with young, urban, professional socialites trying to make partner at a law firm they already work at. All that aside, it's not about comparing professions, it's about comparing dreams. And what's the tag line at the end of the movie?? "Everyone's gotta have a dream."You speak a lot of negativity on things that you make quite obvious you know nothing about. People rap about things that are real to them and the life they live... and as unreal as that may be to YOU, that doesn't mean that it's not real to THEM... so don't be so quick as to dismiss it as FAKE or negative just because it's not a reality that you live. So quick to hate, so slow to think. And you're so quick to emphasize the negative stereotypes in the movie, that you totally neglected comment on J.B.G's BREATHTAKING solo. You want to hear something REALLY real? If all you can find about something is the negative, and you INSIST on preaching on it in a platform such as Amazon.com, what do you think the readers are going to think? You forget that behind every "stereotypical" black person in this movie is the SUCCESSFUL African American person who starred in it... and MADE it. Some of them might not be too far separated from the premise of the story either. Open your eyes and quit hatin.

If you enjoy hip hop music you will enjoy this CD. Each artist has to be creative in their very own way. Without judgement let us reward the creativity that was put into developing this work of art. Great CD. Please listen to it. Listen to the art, the art of someone's acheivements. Not words, that these artists only use to describe a time in history that these things may have occured. Great job!
