From the General Notes:
Besides the music and rhythm, the most distinctive characteristic of hustle is that on Counts &1 of many figures one or both partners step with the ball of one foot placed to the heel of the other foot, followed by a forward step.
From Chapter 1: If the Basic begins with the normal one hand hold, and a four hand hold is desired to begin the next figure, Step 3 is the best time to take lady's left hand with man's right hand. Similarly, a change from a normal one hand hold to a shake hand hold should be made on Step 3. . . .
BASIC WITH MAN CROSSING FRONT: The man may cross in front on Step 2 or Step 4 or both. The effect of his crossing in front is to reduce his progression, so that he becomes the center in the figure, with the lady progressing past him. The man should first learn to dance the Basic without crossing in front, so this figure is placed in the GOLD SYLLABUS.
From the description of Figure 24B, SPINS TO THE RIGHT: The lady repeats Steps 5 and 6 to sustain the spin. Steps 5 and 6 and all repeats are slightly over 1/2 turn, so that the lady progresses in a circle around the man to his right.
