This is one of the worst "books" I have ever encountered. In the traditional sense, it is not a book at all, in that there is no publisher and thus, no editor. As Adams explains, he started with an outline and "worked on each section depending on my mood." He must have, or as he would say, "must of," been in a very sour mood during the entire process. This book reads like a high schooler's English paper where the procrastinating student tried his best to meet the minimum word requirement. The repition is tedious. The excess verbiage is smothering, and consists of distracting personal rememberances, unqualified assertions ("most people don't have the metabolism to have this sort of body {6' 200 lbs.} at a young age {21}"), the obvious ("most {legitimate} massage therapists will not discuss penis size"), and the really obvious ("Hair color tends to come in blonde, light or dark brunette, black, and red"). Mr. Adams needs to learn that being able to type is not the same as being able to write, and having a good word processor is not the same as having a good publisher. Any competant undergraduate journalism major could have taken what is obviously thoroughly researched and fascinating material and produced a better product. In its current form, it is essential unreadable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast, sloppy but interesting, November 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hustlers, Escorts & Porn Stars: The Insider's Guide to Male Prostitution in America (Paperback)
Matt Adams's book has lots of useful tidbits, especially about etiquette and issues of safety. The quotes from the escorts themselves are interesting.

The text is choppy and repetitive. He should hire an editor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Like a 5000 word essay with 1000 words of material, April 6, 1999
By A Customer
I've got to second the comments about the writing style detracting from the book. It's like a 5000-word student essay with 1000 words worth of material. Lots of stretching and repetition.

This guy's editor didn't earn his/her money...

2.0 out of 5 stars Badly in need of an editor, February 17, 1999
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I will grant that the information presented, from the client's standpoint AND the worker's standpoint, is very useful, but it could have been condensed into a twenty page guide. Things like "you'll have better luck if your not so incredibly picky about 'type' (blond, smooth, 5'11" size 9 shoes, etc)" and "don't try to rip off an escort", while fine advice, is repeated over and over and over again till I wanted to shriek. And god help us, this book is BADLY in need of a copy editor, there are a-grammatical segments of text on nearly every page.

4.0 out of 5 stars an excellent handbook on male prostitution, November 6, 1998
By A Customer
Adams has written this book for three audiences: those who are thinking about hiring a hustler or escort; those who are thinking about becoming an escort; those who are just curious about male prostitution. All three audiences are well served by "Hustlers." Adams draws not just on his own experiences in the profession but his conscientious research on this topic. The treatment is informative and unapologetic, with specific discussions of how to get started, fees (add at least 15% to the prices given), and different cities. The appendix on escort web pages is a plus.

Hustlers, Escorts, and Porn Stars is a surprisingly frank and educational exploration of the how, what, where and whys of male prositution. Matt Adams has seriously considered his subject without going for the obvious or sensational. An enlightening book.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the curious and the well-informed, December 29, 1998
By A Customer
Mr. Adams has written a valuable book for anyone who has ever hired an escort, thought about hiring an escort, or was just plain curious about how the World's Oldest Profession functioned within America's gay culture. The answer, not surprisingly, it that it functions quite well thank you, and Mr. Adams thoroughly lays out the terms, structures and conditions of male prostitution. He doesn't write to your prurient interest, but he does write to a broad canvas and touches on every conceivable aspect of sex-for-hire -- including the fact that it's illegal almost everywhere this book will be read. I've placed my copy on the bookshelf next to Polly Adler's "A House is Not a Home" (it seemed the natural place), and I look forward to Mr. Adam's further writings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true compendium for those buying, selling or studying., September 4, 1998
By A Customer
Matt's book is totally accurate to a degree that no other publication out there offers. Everything from STD's and mental health issues to a list of the best escorts in the country. Truly a do's and dont's book on this industry and a way to really make the difficulties not so difficult. An easy read that could easily be used as a source material for studying the subject. Hell, even I myself am listed in it as being one of the top escorts in the nation. Brenden Knight

Hustlers, Escorts, and Porn Stars is the only handbook you'll ever need to travel into the underbelly of the male sex trade. Whether you are buying, selling, or just doing research, author Matt Adams brings a strange honor, and dignity into the world of male prostitution. Propelled by twenty years of experience the author brushes aside the moral disputation, and attacks the subject from the inside out. Travel this taboo highway, and enjoy the ride into the world of the male prostitute
