5.0 out of 5 stars Do People Not Understand the concept of "Remixed" December 19, 2007
By JBizzle
Format:Audio CD
I think that the other reviewers here may be missing the point a little. This is a reinterpretation of some of Hybrid's best work. The remixs aren't intended to sound exactly like the original songs. Just by looking at the track listing & the names of the remixers should already have you pretty well clued in as to what you're getting. If you want songs that sound like the originals my best suggestion would be to listen to Hybrid's original albums. If you're looking for remixs, well this album is for you. This is an amazing album, both 1st & 2nd discs deliver (though I must say disc 2 has gotten more play from me) with stunning remix work on just about every track. Plus you get the added bonus of getting the awesome "Sleepwalking" on disc 2 finally officially released on CD. In my opinion this is a masterpiece that every self respecting electronic fan should have in their collection. No, the tracks don't sound exactly like the originals, but would you've really liked that? Look at the remixers before you buy to get a feel for whether or not you'll truely enjoy, but I personally loved it from start to finish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some quality tracks March 10, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a good album for Hybrid fans but it's not a good introduction to the band for new-comers. The Deadmau5 remix is a stand-out, it was tops on the Beatport charts for a while. The second disc isn't as strong as the first but there are some good grooves on there as well. Overall a good album to complete a Hybrid fan's collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars For the Hybrid completist November 19, 2007
Format:Audio CD
It was always going to be a tricky proposition: how do you remix a team whose own remixing skills are the stuff of reverential muso-bore debates?
Well, the answer seems to be, rather heavy-handedly, if this collection is anything to go by. I'm sorry to say that too many of the tracks start out with the kind of predictable, uninviting flat house beat that wouldn't be so objectionable if it weren't Hybrid we were talking about. Not quite handclaps, obviously... but you get the picture.
As a set of DJ Tools, it's a great way of bringing Hybrid to even some of the more disco-house floors - the Keenan and Anderson reworking of I Know would bring a welcome interlude to even the most full-on, happy-clappy Seamus Haji-type vibe in a club, for example. But maybe whoever wound up with Finished Symphony thought there were enough mixes of it already, because neither remix here includes more than a passing reference to the original, which I thought was a missed opportunity. OK, it's an absolute classic, so anyone who didn't throw most of it out with the bathwater might think they were on a hiding to nothing, but I thought that the right producers (John Graham? Mark Brydon?) could have lit it up the original even more.
That said, the Orb's mix of Higher Than A Skyscraper does give it a lovely, early FSOL feel, but I was disappointed that the so-called "cinematic orchestra" mix of Blackout, which fans will remember as the excellent closing track from Morning Sci-fi, meandered through, rather than using Kirsty Hawkshaw's tour-de-force vocal and taking it into an epic, "widescreen" kind of place. It sounds like Michael Nyman on the mix, more than anything, and the horn section on it is pleasant enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lackluster release November 10, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I have been a huge fan of Hybrid since they first released "Wide Angle" but this album just didn't do it for me. It has a few standout tracks, but most are a poor reinterpretation of what made the orignals great.

The two best remixes on the album are of course by Hybrid themselves but other mentionables are Kosheen, Deadmau5, and Stefan Anion and Starfire.
Most of the tracks I found disappointing were a combination of downtempo and abtract styles which I found really took away from the power of the orginals. If Hybrid plans to release another remix album of their own tracks in the future I sure hope they find a better selection or do it themselves. I have heard much better mixes of their tracks then the ones chosen.
