I Want To BECOME A Human Cannonball,
By The Orange Duke "orangeduke" (Cupertino, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hybrid Vigor (Audio CD)
Webb Wilder is a pub rock/roots rock madman in the style of Cowboy Mouth with just a dash of psychobilly thrown in. Fans of Chickasaw Mud Puppies, Southern Culture On The Skids and The Bad Livers will be especially pleased, although I also recommend the album to fans of straight ahead rock bands like Sister Hazel and Counting Crows, countrified rockers like Steve Earl and Hal Ketchum and witty pub artists like Nick Lowe and The Barenaked Ladies. Punchy, lively and wild, Webb Wilder is definitely a treat for the senses; the album makes you want to dance. Hell, I bought it for full price, that's got to tell you something! Stand Outs are "Human Cannonball' and `Skeleton Crew'. Well, what are you waiting for? Buy it!

almost his very best,

It's too bad that whenever you mention Webb Widler's great sounds to people you also have to mention in the same breath phrases like "under-appreciated" and "undiscovered". If there was any justice in the world, Maria Carey would be scrubbing floors and Webb would have the audience he deserves. But he's not sexy enough, too Southern, too head-first, and too cool. Oh well."Hybrid Vigor" is a good place to start loving Webb's music but "Doo Dad" is the one to buy when you want to get married to his music.

A GREAT CD of one of the most original bands in Rock n' Roll. Webb Wilder and Hybrid Vigor has an edge. They take all of their music to the limit, with nothing held back. Hybrid Vigor is a hard driving sound that's impossible to stop listening to. One Warning though. When listening in your car to Donny "The Twangler" Roberts rip through the leads, you may have difficulty driving less than 80 mph.

I first became acquainted with Webb's music when he visited Australia in the late 1980's to promote Hybrid Vigor. He played the track 'Human Cannonball' on the tv show 'Hey Hey, it's Saturday'. The infectious tune unfortunately wasn't the hit it deserved to be, and Webb disappeared from our shores and to my knowledge - didn't come back. I lost my copy of Hybrid Vigor after lending it to numerous friends and have only managed to track down another copy from the States. I will now be on the lookout for other releases from the man. This is top shelf stuff, believe me. Disappointing that he hasn't received the recognition he thoroughly deserves. Rock on Webb......

This is incredibly energetic cow-punk or something like that. It still amazes me that he did not get completely famous with this stuff. Anaway songs like the human cannonballl really have lots of energy.

If there were ever three band leaders that could be
almost cross-Genre clones of each other in terms of 'hooks' in Rockin' tunes, than Webb Wilder, Rick Nielsen and Jason Ringenberg (of Jason & the Scorchers) would be them [gramatically correct? Who cares...] On his first large label (Island) release, Webb's size 13 EEE's get into all sorts of bastardized Rock tunes from Ventures (Check out their Hawai'i Five-0 cover sometime) style surf Rock to Southern Rock all done with typical Twangy (or is that 'Twanger', as in guitar- ist Donny Roberts) style. 'Human Cannonball' is a laugh out-loud-and-Rock-out- to-it great first single and video! This song has as many hooks in it as Cheap Trick's (Nielsen's band) "Baby Loves to Rock". For slower paced songs look to Webb's 'Doo Dad', or 'It came from Nashvegas'. Everthing is super charged and I still remember hear- ing 3 or 4 cuts of this disk 'On the Radio', when Webb and Co. came to play at the Boathouse in Norfolk, on Jason's bands, "Thunder and Fire" Tour. Webb only played about 45 minutes with the 'Beatniks' (or was it by then the 'Nashvegans' [oh, so sorry. 'Nashvegas' is the Tenn. third Coast area - listen to Jason's "Greetings from Nashville" sometime]). The Scorchers end of that legendary concert will be covered in my review of the "Thunder and Fire" LP. It Came From Nashville was a good Indie label start for W.W., the band. Hybrid Vigor forever linked them to Swampadelic Roots Rock of the highest order! 'Pick Up On It!'

Rock Hard!!,

I remember picking up the demo tape for this, from the record store I worked in at the time, to listen to on the way home. I didn't even get through the first song before I was totally hooked. Every once in a long while an artist (like - John Hiatt, Jimmy Buffett, Tony Joe White, Blues Travler, Kentucky Headhunters) can do that to me and they usually are of great calibre and Webb is Cannonball calibre!
This for me, is what country desperatley needs more of "one foot (size 13A's apparently) in Rock'n'Roll" and like Kentucky Headhunters, Webb and the boys are wearing their kickin' boots! A better foot stompin, riff laden, heavy wailing, hard rockin' sound you'll never find again, so just get it! (if you like it loud and you have a sense of humour about what country should be). "It's up to me and you and the skeleton crew"
