3.0 out of 5 stars good for dust not great for sanding smooth
It did a great job keeping the dust from flying around but I really didn't like the sanding screen. I tried to get as fine a screen as possible but it still seemed to leave little scratch lines in the dried drywall mud. Also very hard to use in a small space such as a bathroom. It would be good for walls in a big room after the first layer of mud, not too good for the...

Having done a couple thousand square feet of drywall finishing the old fashioned way (coughing up dust as I sanded), I was hoping for something inexpensive that would maybe take half of the dust out of the air. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Dust Dog does much more, sucking away almost all of the dust created from sanding. No longer will I emerge from the work area looking like a ghost.

The unit is simple, and the female connection for the pole is sturdy. Some minor drawbacks: while not made of cast iron or anything, the unit is heavier than a plain sanding block, and you also have to dangle the vacuum hose around with you, so you will tire faster when sanding, especially on higher walls and ceilings. Additionally, the "suction control valve" does not have a tremendous amount of adjustability, but I didn't notice that sanding was any harder due to the block sticking to the sanding surface. Lastly, because the vacuum hose dangles off of the bottom of the universal joint, you can't rotate the sanding block around as easily or in as many positions as a plain pole sander. On a positive note, grasping the unit at the universal joint is a relatively comfortable grip to do close-up hand-sanding instead of using the pole.

That being said, I'm pleased with an inexpensive means of dustless drywall sanding. I have mine hooked up to a run-of-the-mill Ridgid shop vac without any special filter, and while I do need to shake the filter out relatively frequently, it does just fine keeping the dust in the vacuum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of dustless sander, March 26, 2006

This is a nice piece of equipment to always have on hand. It's inexpensive compared to other dustless sanders, and still gets the job done. I use it a lot in doing repairs inside finished and lived in homes. There is no masking needed in sanding large repairs. I really like this item. It's only downside is the attachment "Y" can be a bit weak so don't press down too hard when sanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly dustless, February 6, 2007

This pole sander works very good, and captures nearly all of the dust. My first experience was sanding 800 square feet, and I had a barely visible amount of dust on my arms. I also have the Porter Cable 7800, and it definitely is not nearly as good at capturing the dust as this pole sander. I was just using a small 6 gallon Shop Vac QSP with cleanstream filter. The addition of drywall bags in the shop vac will help keep the suction higher. I highly recommend this pole sander and will never use a regular pole sander again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hyde Dust Dog Pole Sander, November 3, 2006
Great item, even better than the Hyde Dust Dog Hand Sander. Used this more than the Hyde Dust Dog Hand Sander once I got on to it. No dust and kept my wife happy with no dust in the rest of the house. Great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has shortcomings but does the job, September 17, 2010

I purchased this to sand ceilings in my home. I had removed the 'popcorn' from ceilings in other room and remembered how the dust had permeated the entire house. I had looked into renting a unit, but the cost was an issue as well as availability for the times I needed it. This unit was less than the cost of the rental so I thought I'd take a shot.

The unit performed well capturing about 95%+ of the dust - I have a shop vac equipped with an Oneida Dust Deputy. the two major issues are weight and stability of the pad. You must realize that sanding over your head with only a pole and sanding pad is hard enough - add the weight of the vacuum hose and fittings and you can see that frequent breaks will be the norm. Second, the pad worked very will sanding along the long axis of the pad. However, when sanding in the direction of its short axis it kept flopping over. This makes it very hard to sand seams.

Overall it kept the house clean and so was well worth the cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars I had good results from this product, April 2, 2009
This review is from: Hyde Tools 09170 Dust-Free Drywall Vacuum Sander (Tools & Home Improvement)
The vacuum pool sanding kit worked very well for me. I used a regular pole that I use in my paint roller. Product is made well "in Canada" and is durable enough to handle my usual strong-arm abuse. Has easy to use sanding screen attaching nubs and flexible shaft that allows you to work from any angle. Also came with several different vacuum hose adapters, which allowed me to use my craftsman large hose vacuum. You will want to use a bag in your vacuum because it does suck up the dust!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop eating dust..., April 25, 2008
I have used this while doing a kitchen renovation and it has worked very well. I think it is largely going to depend on whether the vacuum/ shopvac that you are using is strong enough and filtered well enough, but ours has worked great. Not really even any dust left on the wall. Any pole sander is a little unwieldy and the hose adds a bit of bulk, but it's been worth the very minor annoyance of dealing with the hose to not have to entomb the area you are working on in plastic & dropcloths. I'd highly recommend this product. I don't know how well it'd stand up in a professional application, but for the do it yourselfer with the occasional project, this is great. Well worth the money when you consider the time savings and the health benefits of not inhaling the dust.

5.0 out of 5 stars I don't know of a fix for my only complaint, June 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hyde Tools 09170 Dust-Free Drywall Vacuum Sander (Tools & Home Improvement)
I had a LOT of drywall to finish quickly. With this tool hooked to my shop vac from Home Depot I barely got any dust anywhere. The vacuum can use a dust bag and filter so I used both and didn't put any dust back into the air through that. The clamp mechanism for the sanding sheets was great and quick to use. It has the benefit of keeping the clamp open while you position the sheet too.

This thing worked great!

My complaints?

You could really only push it one direction back and forth. If you tried to push it sideways it flipped over and I gouged the ceiling once or twice (okay, many more times; I'm an idiot.) I don't know that there really is a fix for that that lets it keep its flexibility.

The other complaint has more to do with the power of my vacuum. It pulled the sander so hard against the drywall it was difficult to move. I opened the sander's two vents as much as I could but still needed to bleed off more suction. I could easily have bought the hand held sander and used both at once with a Y adapter.

We own a small home remodeling company and install a lot of drywall. This tool is being used at least 3 times a week and helps tremendously with the clean-up after sanding the drywall. Should have purchased this long ago.
