I have had no problems so far- the temp seems pretty steady. Came with a little clip for the cord; it stays under the gravel and hasn't cooked anyone/anything yet!

I installed this heater under the gravel in my 3 gallon Tetra Cube aquarium. The temperature stays at 73 - 76 degrees. My betta ("Foghorn") is now very happy. fyi, this heater is not adjustable, it just stays on all the time, so the final temperature of your aquarium is going to depend on the size and shape of your tank (the amount of surface area for heat loss) and also the temperature of the room. We keep our house at 68 - 70 F. The description says that this heater is for tanks up to 5 gal. However, if I had a 5 gallon tank, I would probably look for a 10 watt heater.

I bought this because the 15 watt version heated my 6.5 gallon tank an average of 12 degrees warmer, rather than the "5 to 10 degrees" promised if you have a tank that's the recommended 5 to 10 gallons for that size. However, the 7.5 watt version makes barely any discernible difference in temperature - 1 to 2 degrees at most! I really don't see how there's this much difference between the two, but clearly, their recommendations are off for both of these. I'd use the 15 watt one for no less than 7 or 8 gallons, and the 7.5 for no more than 3 or 4 (I tested this 7.5 watt one in a 4 gallon bucket and it raised the temp by about 5 degrees there.) Overall, a good product, with really exaggerated size ranges.

Hello J.P. -
My betta fish is in a 3 gallon tank now after being in a 1 gallon for a while. The Hydor 7.5 Slim Heater works very well as it automatically adjusts with the room temperature. To really test it I had to turn on the house heater for the first time. The Hydor worked great in that I could feel, by touching the tank glass, the warmth increase. To know that it is working you may at first see air bubbles on the device - just ignore them. But do not worry if you don't. The design of the heater is second to what I love the most. I like it being flat. You can place it just about anywhere in the tank although I place mine right on the side of the tank with the suction cup. I have not tried it under the gravel yet. When you clean the tank just run it under hot water after you unplug it. I just think it looks good and gives the tank a modern look. My betta loves it and will sometimes position itself next to it. It has helped to cause my fish to flourish. For its price and technology both you and your fish should really enjoy it.

This is really only any good to heat up a 1.5 gallon aquarium. I know because it's barely keeping my half filled 3 gallon aquarium at about 70 degrees.

I've had a beta for a year without a heater, and he was failing. I feel bad because I didn't know what was wrong - tried many things before I found out he is tropical (duh) and needs warm water. Anyway, he is currently in a 1 gallon tank and I was concerned it might get too hot. This heater is perfect. Water temp is 80 degrees, no hotter. Great value too

I purchased this heater about 2 months ago for my Beta who seemed to be very unhappy that his water temp was dropping as our outside temps started dropping into single digits outside which means the house temp was dropping too. Based on the previous reviews, I also bought a timer along with this heater. The heater lies underneath the rock in the tank, and it is not visible except for the cord coming up and out at the back corner of the tank. I like that aspect as it keeps the look of the tank zen like. It took about a week of iterating with timer to optimize the tank temp. If you do not have a timer, the water WILL get too hot for the Beta according to my thermometer in the tank. So, if you don't have a thermometer, get one of those too. You will have a much happier if not healthier Beta. :-)

Love this heater for a 5 gal tank. I put it under the gravel and so far works great. I like that it's not too expensive, so if it ever gives out, I can just easily get another.
