Perfect heater for small tanks,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hydor MINI HEATER Aquarium Heater 7.5 Watts for Tanks 2-5 gal (Misc.)
I bought these for my 2.5gallon killifish tanks. These heaters take up very little space in the small tanks, since they are flat.
But be aware that these heaters don't have temperature controls, so the water temperature will change when the room temperature changes. My tank temperature ranged from 92F to 70F with the heater plugged in from May to December. I had to unplug the heaters on very hot days. It seems that these heater will raise the water temperature in a 2.5gallon thank by 8 to10F over the room temperature. Finally, all 6 mini heaters that I own have been reliable for 8 months now, and all are consistent in how much they heat the same volume of water.

I purchased this heater for our beta who lives in a 1 gallon jar; note the heater is spec'd for 2 to 5 gallon containers. During the winter we keep our house at 60 degrees and this heater keeps the jar at a consistent 72.

Good heater for tiny tanks.,
This review is from: Hydor MINI HEATER Aquarium Heater 7.5 Watts for Tanks 2-5 gal (Misc.)
This heater works well, not bad for small tanks (5 gallons or less). I purchased this for my 1 gallon tank, and it heated the water up to the low 80s. The heater works submerged or placed under the tank. I keep my apartment on the cool side, so this heater did the trick. A word of warning, though--if you have a 1-gallon tank, make sure you have a thermometer in it, because if you keep your home temperature in the high 60s and into the 70s, chances are the heater will then heat the water too warmly, into the mid to upper 80s, at which point you'll have to unplug the heater and monitor the temp as needed. Still, not bad for the price.

pleasant little heater,

I bought this little gadget to heat my Beta's bowl after he went into pseudo-hibernation. I was afraid a one-gal bowl would overheat so I got a 2-gal one for it. It started warming up immediately, and as all the other reviews state, it gets it about 5-10 degrees above room temperature. Since it doesn't have a thermostat, you really don't want it to do more than that for fear of overcooking your little friend.
My Beta LOVES it. It took him two and a half weeks to come out of his stupor, but he's eating again. It's harmless enough that he actually huddled up behind it, so it clearly doesn't bother him to touch it. He likes it a lot warmer than room temperature (he's really happy at 80 degrees!). SAM (the fish) and I are both very thankful.

Makes the betta happy,

My betta fish's water was mostly in the 60-degree range, below a betta's ideal temperature (70-80F). As a result, the betta was very inactive. I bought this heater for a one-gallon bowl, and it increased the water temperature about 10 degrees. Now the betta is very active.
Even though the specs say it's designed for a 2-5 gallon tank, I'd still recommend it for a 1-gallon bowl. Just keep an eye on the ambient temperature because this heater does not have an automatic shutoff.

Great mini heater,

I purchased the Hydor Mini 7.5W Heater for my .9 gallon tank with my betta. Note that the heater is spec'd for a 2-5 gallon tank. Before he had to deal with 70 degree temperatures, which is not ideal and borderline too cold. Since putting the heater under the gravel in the tank, the tank is now constantly between 75-80 degrees, which is the normal temperature for a betta. I highly recommend this product to keep your betta longer and keep him more comfortably.

My Betta Fish Love This Heater,
This review is from: Hydor MINI HEATER Aquarium Heater 7.5 Watts for Tanks 2-5 gal (Misc.)
I have read so many reviews about this heater. You just do not know what to believe. This is my experience. My Betta fish, Max is 2 years old and lives in a 2 gallon bowl and he loves the heater. My Betta fish, Piper is 5 months old and she lives in a 1 1/2 gallon bowl and loves the heater. My Betta fish, Zach who is almost 2 years old lives in a 1 gallon bowl (I swear he prefers a 1 gallon bowl to a 2 gallon bowl...he has been in both and seems happier in the 1 gallon) loves the heater too!

This little heater works like a charm in a smaller tank. I have a 3 gallon tank with a single Siamese Fighting Fish. He's more active and happy now that his tank stays toasty. Quick turn-around as well. Exactly what I expected.

Hot, hot, hot!,

I purchased this for a 2.5 minibow aquarium and found that if you leave the light on ASWELL as the heater it can cause a BIG temperature jump. I mention this because my betta really got stressed from all that heat the first day - I think he got a little sick because of his clamped fins and lethargy the next day. So be careful that the heater doesn't overheat your aquarium/bowl. My idea is to leave it on at night and then turn it off during the day so that the light can maintain the aquarium at a few degrees lower, it's the best option without a 15 watt automatic shut off heater in a 5 gallon aquarium, which is probably what I will do when I can afford it next month! Good luck:0)

Not very "mini", and keeps water way too warm.,
This review is from: Hydor MINI HEATER Aquarium Heater 7.5 Watts for Tanks 2-5 gal (Misc.)
I bought this unit to replace a broken heater, and with the house thermostat set at 68 degrees, overnight, this heater had my 2.5 gallon temporary aquarium at close to 90 degrees, and this is with the aquarium light never having been turned on! I lowered the house thermostat to 65 degrees, but the tank still remained well above 85. Today, I lowered the house thermostat to 60 degrees while I am at work, to see if this reduces the tank temp. I am afraid to just turn the heater off completely because I don't want to kill my fish. Remarkably, they seem to be doing okay and look healthy and active.
In any case, this heater is not adjustable, so I need to purchase yet another heater with better controls so I can slowly get the aquarium temp. back down to a more reasonable temp. range. I should have just spent the money on a proper replacement in the first place, but when I read that this unit warms a 2 gallon aquarium by approx. 5 degrees, I thought it would be perfect, as this would have brought my aquarium temp. to approx 73 degrees, which is what was at before the old heater broke...just right for the two female platies I have in this temporary tank. This heating unit has danergously raised my tank temp. by slightly over 20 degrees, however! Without this heater, the tank was at slightly below 70 degrees. Either I have a malfunctioning unit, or this is a horrible heater. Also, in spite of being a mini heater, it takes up a large amount of space, and the one I received is not flat. It likes to curl and bend, which makes it more cumbersome in the little tank. Thank goodness this tank set up is temporary, while I wait for my larger tank to cycle. I hope my poor platies survive this ordeal. |
