Book Description

July 27, 2007 1418064025 978-1418064020 2
This revised edition of Hydraulics for Firefighting effectively teaches hydraulics by addressing the underlying science in a basic, understandable way. Each chapter builds on the last with a logical, systematic approach. The simplification of this complex subject, including the updating of formulae, makes the text usable for both rookie and veteran firefighters and those preparing for promotional examinations. New features of this edition include: steps of pump operation, testing fire pumps, calculating hose lengths for foam educators, and an expanded rural water supply section. The book is ideal for college level courses and correlates to the course objectives of the Fire and Emergency Services in Higher Education (FESHE) model curriculum for Fire Protection Hydraulics & Water Supply, as well as an excellent solution for fire departments and fire academies training new pump operators.

2.0 out of 5 stars The most abbreviated appendix ever, January 2, 2009
This review is from: Hydraulics for Firefighting (Paperback)
A friend of mine, who is also earning his degree in Fire Science, has been coming to me for clarification on many of the formulas in the text. While others may find it convenient to have "abbreviated" and simplified formulas, the lack of a thorough explanation of the mathematical underpinning of these formulas makes it difficult to understand just where they come from and why they are the way they are. It leaves rote memorization as the reader's only option for retaining this information.

While this sort of retention and recall is, understandably, necessary in the thick of the fight against a raging fire, during the learning period, a prospective student should be given every opportunity to "understand" as opposed to "memorize" the material. How else can one expect innovation instead of stagnation and the mindless rehearsal of practices that may or may not be optimal (or even relevant)?

Also, the appendix in this text is horrible! I challenge you to use the appendix to find the formula to calculate Nozzle Pressure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complete info, March 30, 2008

This review is from: Hydraulics for Firefighting (Paperback)
I needed this text for a course I'm taking to complete my degree in Fire Science Management. Aside from one minor formula discrepancy, the information is thorough and extensive. Not only are formulas provided, they are simplified as much as possible for ease in calculation. Formulas are provided for anything and everything you'd ever want or need to calculate concerning hydraulics for firefighting. It is a great text and will become a handy reference.
