Customer Reviews

Some of the heat mats are not calibrated correctly, its a factory issue.

It would be worth it to me to spend a little more on a better one, even though i spent about thirty bucks on this crappy plastic.
Wita Savitha
The plastic tray is too flimsy and the top lets water drip out along the seams which do not seal well.

Too shallow, needs to be refilled with water everyday.
Heating pad melts cooks pellets that are not in an inch of water.
Dome, which shipped in abox, in another box was bent beyond repair.
For 45$ no cloning gel ?

This thing is great for killing seeds and murdering cuttings.

I have been gardening for 20 years.

The plug stay very dry and you have to keep them moist every day. The pad is good and the dome is plenty high. I would not buy it again for that price; too expensive for what it is. Not a good value

It was not a bad purchase, as I like the size of the tray and the height of the dome, but I will probably not use the heating mat again. The heating mat got TOO HOT for my seedlings - they all shot up fast and spindly, then quickly withered. I like the little coconut bark pods, they worked well. In retrospect, I should have gotten the same set without the heating mat and saved some $$.

I have the heat mat and a similar set up for plant cuttings. I got the mat for hopefully a better rooting rate but without the hydrofarm thermostat the heat mat is WAY too hot. After I cooked a whole tray of cuttings I figured it out that the mat was too much for them. I took the temp. and it was 105+F inside my dome with the vents open which of course lets the water evap out.

I have had varying degrees of success with a dome really similar to this one. From 50-100% Bottom warmth is very important for the higher rates IME but when I saw this add I had to say to make sure to get the thermostat for this or look for something else I guess. I used the top of my tv to root plants several times though.

I noticed that there were some complete novices who bought this for experimental reasons and had little idea of how to successfully make this work:

After using the included supplies DO NOT use regular soil. ESPECIALLY NOT dirt from your yard! If you don't want to spend the money for more jiffy pellets at least get a good seed starting soil or add a B-vitamin fertilizer to a traditional potting/garden soil to assist in healthy root development. If you use a traditional soil with fertilizers be sure to add a diluted plant fertilizer when sprouts appear. Seedlings burn easy, you do not want to over-fertilize them.

Mold can grow very quickly, which is why commercial hydrofarmers use fungicides. Root rot is one of the most common killers of hydro grown plants. You can purchase a good fungicide for around $8. If you get a concentrated version be sure to follow the dilution directions exactly. More is NOT better.

You should also be aware of your water quality if you are using tap. Some municipal supplies are highly chlorinated and/or not pH balanced. This can result in sprouts that appear then quickly burn, yellow and die. If you want fantastic results get a pH/Chlorine kit ($20, or you could even get aquarium test strips to make it easier/cheaper) and check your water before beginning any sort of hydrofarm. Additives can be purchased to alter the pH, if your water is highly chlorinated, use filtered with a hydro-fertilizer.

Some of the heat mats are not calibrated correctly, its a factory issue. Be sure to place the heat mat on a solid topped table, not glass, and to be extra careful place a towel over the heat mat to help diffuse the heat.

My hot shack came with a bent up dome. The picture on the box look different from the actual product. Instruction that came with went to another product. Product of poor quality. Very much overrated.

I've been gardening about 25 years. This year I decided to start my warm season vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and basil from seed indoors. The results were disappointing.

As another reviewer noted that the heat pad is too hot. That was also my experience. The peat pellets are small, roughly half the volume of a Jiffy peat pellet. When the sprouts outgrew the peat pellets, I transferred them to larger pots, as there was still a danger of spring frosts. Few of the plants thrived. Many seemed to have their roots stuck in the netting of the peat pellets. Overall none of the plants did as well as those you might buy from a garden center.

I'm going to try starting plants from seed again next year, but it definitely won't be with this setup.
