Product Description

Hydrofarm’s self-watering tomato planters provide lightweight, strong support for tomatoes, beans, peas, cucumbers and other climbing plants and flowers. Use with any potting soil or coco planting mix and the easy-fill reservoir system delivers water and nutrients from below, helping avoid over or under watering. The sturdy frame construction help support the weight of vines as they grow, allowing the plant to devote more energy to developing fruit and preventing the fruit from falling off before it’s ripe.

I would test the level of water with my fingers thru the openings.

I would recommend purchasing soil made for this type of planter if you buy one or it will not be doing what it's supposed to do.
Brooke
Using it on my deck, it is neat looking and seems to be holding the plants well (I have tomatoes and cukes).

So, I have the trellis system as well as the tomato barrel. The barrel is working just fine and the water wicks up into the plant quickly, however the trellis is a different story. The self-watering function is just no working. The system was easy to put together and intuitive, however once I got the soil in and added water, the water just sat in the bottom and was not wicked up to soil. I think this may have something to do with the soil mixture that I used or it could just be faulty design. I would recommend purchasing soil made for this type of planter if you buy one or it will not be doing what it's supposed to do.

This is the first time that I have tried something like this and really didn't expect much. So many times you see the pictures but when you personally try it, your plants or flowers look nothing like what you saw in the ad. I am now a believer in this product. It has done everything that you said it would. I have had a garden in my back yard for several years and had some success. Last year and this year we had an over abundance of rain and that has caused the garden to be under water. However before all the rain the plants that I planted in my garden where the same size as the ones that I planted in my Hydrofarm Tomato Trellis Garden. The plants in my garden are about 10 to 12 inches high. The plants in my Hydrofarm are over 4 feet tall and look as though they are on steriods. I took pictures just to show people. I would recommend this product to anyone. In fact I have some friends that are planning to purchase this product because they have seen what I have been able to grow in mine. Thank you for a wonderful and simple way to grow plants. I will be purchasing more of these.
Sincerely,
Ron Dempsey

I received it in a timely manner. There were a few cracks in the handle part on one of the plastic containers, nothing to get upset about. I have some that I had from last year and they really work well for small spaces. I enjoy using them, the plants get so big and i don' t have to worry about watering as often, a real time saver and you can wheel them around from place to place, plus i have the trellis and it comes in handy for my vining plants. I recommend these to people with small spaces-works well.

Summer 2013 was my second year growing tomatoes in containers. The Trellis is twice the cost of the Tomato barrel. I strongly recommend buying the Barrel over the Trellis. Our local SummerWinds Nursey usually has a spring sale for $25.

The Trellis container did its job, but the trellis is weak and blends. See my pictures. Note, Amazon has moved the reviewers uploaded pictures. From the product's first web page, scroll down almost to the bottom, and to the right side, look for " Product Images from Customers". The reason my container is so high, is to avoid the lawn sprinklers.

Fertilizer: My first year I used FoxFarm potting soil and had good results. For 2013, I was at a small hydroponics store buying FoxFarm GrowBig, and was talked into buying some off brand organic fertilizer. I don't know if it was the fertilizer but this year the first tomatoes develop brown spots called blossom end rot. usually caused by lack of calcium.

GrowBig & Tomato-Tone: I used GB for 2 years with very good results. I fill the bottle's cap full, to 1 gallon of water. I use GB till the plant gets approx 4ft high or till the first tomato shows some red color. As for FoxFarm's BigBloom and TigerBloom, I was using them when I got brown spots (blossom end rot). I then switch to Tomato-Tone, which has higher level of calcium. It stopped the brown spots. So next year its GrowBig and Tomato-Tone for me. I also used a 3 in 1 fungicide spray, while the plant was young.

Watering: When I first transfer the plant to the container, I water from the top. The roots have not had time to grow to the bottom, thus should be water from the top, not the side. I would test the level of water with my fingers thru the openings. When it was half level I would water usually every other morning, never in the evening. I live in SF-San Jose area. Our day weather is usually mild, 75-85 degrees, nights 50-60.

Really great, my husband can't do gardening in the yard, with this he can sit at a chair and plant and then wheel it outside on the back porch. Its perfect and easy for him to handle. Very pleased.

Convenient growing container system, easy to set-up and use. The system uses potting mix and 7-7-7 fertilizer, garden lime included in most kits but can be purchased separately. Overflow prevents over watering, remember it will overflow. The trellis is light weight and easily damaged but is sufficient for a growing season and can be duplicated.
