I was looking for a method to secure the bow and stern of my sea kayak when transporting it on my roof rack. I had shopped around and the rope ratchet system sold by Thule seemed a little pricey. I wanted to throw something together of my own for less. I found these and I have to admit I was a little skeptical about buying these given that they are so inexpensive.
No need to be skeptical. I found that the rope was good quality. It is soft, bends and knots easily. The ratchets are super easy to use. Just loop the rope through and pull tight. The metal hooks are plenty strong and the plastic ratchet housing is the kind of plastic that has glass in it. Very strong plastic, not cheesy plastic one might expect at this price.
Bottom line... A quality product and I trust them to hold down my kayak.

I really like these rope ratchets, They are much easier to use than strap ratchets. I use them to tie down my canoe's front and back to the car- works great.

A few of our older ones got lost, or misplaced. So, someone purchased different ones, made by a different company. They were okay, but after they got wet, the rope expanded when it dried and it was difficult to get them to work well. So, I decided to look these up by name. Because, these are awesome and work really well. If they get wet, the rope reacts better when it dries.

High marks for this mini-winch...

1) The guts are metal, not plastic.

2) Four screws hold the mechanism together, so you can take it apart far enough to wash out any dirt and grime that build up around the wheel (a rivet at the pointy end keeps the spring loaded release from flying off into Netherland.

3) The rope is high quality with a nice smooth feel. The ends are terminated in such a way to prevent fraying.

4) The ratchet makes a really cool noise when you tighten your load down.

To set it up, thread the rope into the ratchet from the bottom and then rotate the knurled wheel to make the rope pop out the other side (very reliable. It's not a thread through a needle sort of thing). Hook the ratchet to what you are tying down and then either tie the other end down with the far end of the rope directly or tie the additional hook to the rope end first. To cinch it tight just pull on the end of the rope you threaded through the ratchet. Note that there is no "winch handle" to cinch it tight. You are using the strength of your hand(s) pulling on the rope.

A solution that allows for actually ratcheting rather than hand pulling on small jobs might be this handy little item: Ben-mor Cables Inc C78005V Mini Winch Clothesline Cable Tightener. I almost bought one of these for my application (cinching down a tarp cover on a deck), but it seems it would be a bit tedious tightening it down each time the tarp cover is put in use.

just what I wanted. works smooth and if the rope gets cut from rubbing through a sharp edge. it can easily be replaced with 1/4 rope. I use these every day on and off 2 to 5 times. flat straps can't be fixed easily. these can with new rope.
great invention.

You can use them for everything. When we got them, we started using them right away for our canoe and kayak. We even use them to help keep buckets and whatnot from falling over in the truck. Worth the price.

I am glad I have the rope ratchet because I am not the best when it comes to tying ropes and with the rope ratchet you don't have to be because you can just hook it on and ratchet it down.
