Book Description

0138991545 978-0138991548 November 6, 1998 1

This quick-reference guide explains how to conduct sound hydrogeologic studies and prepare solid hydrogeologic reports. The emphasis is on ground water, but pertinent surface-water and soil-water topics are covered briefly as well. It uses figures, tables and case-histories illustrate and summarize main points and to relate them to actual problems. Discusses what geologic and hydrologic data are needed, where to get them and how to compile/present them. Tells what to do with geologic information once it is compiled, focusing on three major categories -- stratigraphy, structure and geomorphology. Addresses what do with hydrologic information once it is compiled --focusing on surface, soil and ground water. Discusses the need for, and make-up of, a sound working model of the hydrogeology of a study area. Reviews the basic components of a hydrogeologic report, outlines a proven approach to any writing task, and provides tips on avoiding common mistakes. Shows how the data gathering, analysis, and report writing apply to specific types of hydrogeologic studies, including case histories, e.g., water supply, ground-water contamination, hydrologic monitoring, mining, ground-water modeling. For hydrogeologists, hydrologists, environmental engineers, environmental scientists, civil engineers, geologists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Application of theory in the field., October 13, 2000

This review is from: Hydrogeology in Practice: A Guide to Characterizing Ground-Water Systems (Paperback)
Engineering applications of hydrogeology is a new subject in our country. As a research assistant, we had some problems to show the practical use of hydrogeology, especially field hydrogeology, to our students. This book may solve many of our application problems. Although, English is a foreign language for us and our students, this book can easily be followed. Most of the mathematical formula frightens students, but as this book was kept away from them, students will easily get the hydrogeological point of view.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book received!, October 24, 2010

Despite my giving an address that was impossible to deliver to, the book arrived on time and in good condition. Mr. Fisher was more on top of the situation than I was; and for this, I am very thankful! The book has insights that are quite valuable to my studies and would recommend it to anyone with a scholarly interest in hydrology, geology or the art of writing environmental reports.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction - concise, practical and conceptual, June 5, 2006

This review is from: Hydrogeology in Practice: A Guide to Characterizing Ground-Water Systems (Paperback)
Most introductory hydrogeology textbooks are massive books full of difficult math. The concepts behind the math can be easily lost. This book focuses on conceptual issues rather than mathematical modelling. At only 248 pages, it makes an excellent adjunct for students working off more difficult texts. It is also useful for beginning consultants as it covers such oft-neglected topics as report-writing and publically-available data sources.
