This is my first product review on Amazon, that's how strongly I feel about this bulb. Before I purchased this bulb a couple weeks ago, I did a lot of shopping around on Amazon for grow bulbs. I was looking for a bulb to grow some Ghost Chillis and Scotch Bonnets in my wardrobe. The only constraints I was limited by were the price of a bulb and the heat it produces. Standard HPS bulbs tend to be a bit more pricey and produce a ton of heat, something I wouldn't chance with my (wooden) wardrobe garden. CFLs (this bulb) produce less light, but also less heat. With that being said, you are able to safely move the bulb closer to your plants to make up for the lack of light. So after all this consideration, I settled on this bulb. The price is excellent and I already knew the bulb was going to be huge. Well the bulb came in and I rigged it up in my wardrobe right above 3 Ghost and 4 Scotch Bonnet sproutlings. A week ago when this was all put together, my pepper plants were maybe 1" tall with two tiny leaves. I lined my wardrobe with aluminum foil (to capture light and heat) and put the light on a timer that allowed 4 hours of darkness per day. I placed my peppers in self-watering pots about 8" under the bulb and went on vacation for a week.

Well here I am one week later. I came home, opened my wardrobe and I was stunned. Every last plant simply exploded in lush greenery. For a $11 product, I was not expecting this level of success. I don't expect this bulb to actuate flowering in my peppers, I will probably have to purchase a more "red-spectrum" bulb for that job. But as for producing beautiful, green leaves... This bulb absolutely does the trick.

I have to say that the bulb is HUGE, but is is extremely bright. Its goes excellent for growing plants. My seeds grow a half of inch a day with theses bulbs. I highly recommend these CFL bulbs if you are growing any plants indoors.

This bulb is much larger than I thought it was, so make sure to check the size shown in the image to make sure it will fit for your application. It's also much more awesome. I replaced a 60 watt incandescent grow light with this thing. It's so much brighter, and our plant has taken off after adding it to our grow area. We're growing a ghost pepper plant indoors, and it has really flourished after adding the bulb.

This is the most expensive light bulb I've ever bought, and it lasted less than six months. Not only didn't it burn out, but it nearly started an electrical fire in the process. I bought a Bulbrite 50R20PG 50W Plant Grow Reflector Bulb at the same time for a fraction of the price, used in it an identical lamp, and it's still going strong.

I have written a review for this product earlier, but since I have a bit more to say, and they have sent me 'another' review, I will go ahead and state this:

Within two weeks, my Ferns perked up and are growing towards the light as well as my other plants. Even the ones that were dying from lack of light - they have come back to life! I will be purchasing another one in about a month.

Yes, these bulbs do stick out, but so what. They assist in the provision of life. Just take an old lamp stand - and use it. The bulbs fit in the regular size sockets. My babies are in my office where I do my Graduate Studies, therefore, no one truly sees the bulbs but me. But they are not ugly sticking out either.

What I do like - is the light is marvelous for studying too!!!! When the light goes out at night, and then I turn on my energy efficient regular house bulb, it is like "wow! It does resemble the light of the sun, doesn't it!?"

Enjoy it! I do!

I purchased this bulb in early December of 2013. I ran it 12 hour on, 12 hours off. It worked great for indoor plants and seedlings but to only last 550 hours is much worse than the 10.000 hours listed. The bulb melted at the base and formed a 1/2" hole that smoke and liquid was coming out. The smell it gave off was so bad that I had to open all the windows in my house and run every fan for 6 hours (in the middle of Winter) and still the smell lingered. It is a great bulb when it works but I did notice a reduction of brightness after about 20 days of use. I did buy another one and will give it one more chance (just in case i got a defective one). From many of the reviews here and other places, it seems to be a common problem with CFL bulbs. Why advertise at 10,000 hours when it can't produce even a 10th of that?

Note: I can't speak to longevity yet, as I have only been using it for one month. I will update when it burns out to give a better idea of it's lifetime.

I usually do not have a green thumb, but I was really excited to have successfully started an herb grade (from seed!) over the summer. Living in Boston, I knew that when winter hit the cold and lack of daylight were going to be an issue for me. When I first brought everything indoors, it seemed like positioning the plants near windows might be good enough, but after only a couple of weeks they started to look pretty bad. I was committed to getting them through the winter, so I bought this bulb and built up a foil fort around my herb table (see pictures) in order to maximize their light exposure. Within two weeks everything was looking better (even the aloe vera) and my chives are growing out of control. So far I'm very happy with the intensity of the bulb and the heat level. It does get warm, but I can still position it pretty close to the plants in order to minimize light fall-off.

I would (and did) recommend this to a friend.

Edit: After 8 months of daily use (several hours per day in the winter, less in the summer) the bulb burnt out. All things considered I'm ok with that considering how well it worked for my needs.
