5.0 out of 5 stars How the Water Cycle Works, February 11, 2005
This review is from: Hydro's Adventure Through the Water Cycle (Paperback)
In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught. ~Baba Dioum

Hydro is a wise, whimsical water molecule who travels around the earth in clouds, slides down hills and evaporates into mist. He shows how water moves through the water cycle and instead of just presenting facts, this is in the form of a pleasant story. Hydro has conversations with rivers, talks to Nibbler the Salmon and takes a break at the "Liquid Lunch Deli." It is all rather amusing even to me and I think children will learn a great deal from this story that takes you from snowflakes to groundwater.

The imaginative art gives a greater understanding to the process. Water molecules take the "Vapor Express" from the top of a wave and rise into the air. They all look like they are hopping aboard a train.

The animals in the book discuss environmental issues and explain erosion and how chemicals pollute streams. It is all very easy to understand and makes complete sense.

"We need trees and shrubs growing along the banks of our streams and rivers to provide shade and to prevent erosion (e-RO-shun)." ~Nibbler

A glossary explains terms like "Crystallization" and "Hexagonal." I like the way the water cycle is presented in a playful story. This is information children will remember.

A delightful teaching book all about water, where it comes from & where it goes. It is elegantly & delightfully illustrated by Michele Han, & contains some lovely big words with pronunciation guides, a glossary & bibliography, & tons of imaginative connections to how the water of our world works for us.

Rebeccasreads recommends HYDRO'S ADVENTURE THROUGH THE WATER CYCLE for when your little ones ask: what is water?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fact-based picture book for young readers ages 7 to 12, November 6, 2004
This review is from: Hydro's Adventure Through the Water Cycle (Paperback)
Hydro's Adventure Through The Water Cycle by Randi and Michael Goodrich, is the story of Hydro, a wise and whimsical water molecule who travels through a never-ending water cycle crisscrossing the skies, sliding down mountains, and evaporating into a cloudy mist. This fact-based picture book science story is quite nicely illustrated for young readers ages 7 to 12 by Michele Han. Deftly embedded within the text of a charmingly told tale is basic information on how the earth's water cycle works; who is affected by the earth's water cycle; and the challenges that confront the water cycle. Also available in a hardcover edition (0965110168, $24.95), Hydro's Adventure Through The Water Cycle is an excellent and very highly recommended grade school through junior high science class curriculum supplement reading list addition.
