Product Description

INCLUDES A BOVEDA CALIBRATING KIT Most people dont know, but every hygrometer should be calibrated, how else do you know if it is accurate? Up until now, after you calibrated your hygrometer you had to remember how "off" the reading was from actual humidity. In 2005 I came up with a simple idea. Create a digital hygrometer that can not only be calibrated, but can easily be adjusted after calibration. Simply perform the 75% salt test using our One-Step Calibration Kit or the salt in a bag test, adjust to the correct humidity, press the set button, and your HygroSet is calibrated and ready to go! Never wonder again if your digital hygrometer is accurate! The HygroSet is the first digital hygrometer capable of being adjusted after calibration. Each click of the adjustment knob changes the humidity display (+ / -) by 1%.

So did I just get a bad unit or something??

Again though, it does the job just fine, and it even looks OK.

This is a moderately cheap hygrometer with one interesting feature: it allows the user to recalibrate it. Unfortunately, the calibration knob is VERY difficult to use and has a limited range. You can eventually adjust the reading but the process is very annoying and time consuming. The product comes with a calibration bag, which is a nice touch; however, you can make one yourself with a ziplock bag and some damp table salt, so you should not buy this product just because it includes a "calibrating kit." It is worth noting that this kit allows calibration near 75% RH but hygrometer calibration is a nonlinear process so if you want good accuracy far from 75% RH you should calibrate with a different salt test (e.g., potassium carbonate will allow calibration at 43% RH, which is a more useful value if you want to measure ambient home humidity.) I would happily pay double the price for a hygrometer that is easy to calibrate, but I have not found a satisfactory model yet. This hygrometer may meet your needs if you only need modest accuracy and don't mind fiddling with the control knob, but I suspect most users will conclude this product is overpriced for the level of quality.

It can get humid in Chicago and if you live in a lower than ground level apartment, you'll want to have one of these handy. I purchased this after a heavy rain storm caused some flooding and was worried about mold, but didn't want to invest in an expensive dehumidifier. After calibrating the hygrometer, which did take a bit longer than the package said, I tested its accuracy by comparing it to several industrial humidity sensors in a data center environment; the readings were the same on the industrial sensor and this hygrometer.

Build quality is what you'd expect for the price, sturdy plastic with a plastic feel so a fall will likely break it. The display does not sleep. Personally, I'd like it if this had a kick-stand so that it can sit at my desk and be readable at a glance, but it does stand upright. Calibration is done overnight and if you need to adjust the reading, then it's recommended to let it sit in the calibration bag overnight again.

Worth the price if you absolutely need to measure humidity immediately around you.

Okay, so I buy this calibration kit with the little hygrometer.

I carefully follow the calibration instructions.
I allow the unit to stabilize for the recommended time.
Now, I see the reading is only 40%! so I am told to turn the little plastic
knob clockwise until it reads 75.5%.

I am turning the knob, I see the reading going up, then, it stops turning!
will not turn any more, and the reading is still way off, only about 50%.

I turn the knob the other way, and find out it only turns 2 or 3 revolutions
and stops.
So, I turn it all the way counterclockwise, I get a reading of 40%. I turn it
all the way clockwise, I get 50%!! LOL

I try again, wait longer to stabilize, same thing happens!!

So did I just get a bad unit or something??

Too much hastle to ship back...in the trash it goes :(

I bought one of these from the place that I got my humidor two years ago and it has been great.

Pros:
-easy to read, even when the battery is dying off (like mine is now) it still functions just with lighter numbers
-easy to calibrate

Cons:
-Like everything with a magnet in a humidor it has a tendency to not hold all the time
-the battery doesnt last for ever :)

You probably are not going to find a better hydrometer in this price range.
