Official "Strength In Numbers" video

When reality becomes fragmented, confusing and splintered; when life as you know it falls apart; when existence itself becomes a burden, there is hope.

Times Of Grace's debut album, The Hymn of a Broken Man, explores the depths of human misery with artful desperation, muscular dexterity, heavy aggression and gorgeous melody. The band's inaugural presentation is as rich and ... Read more in Amazon's Times of Grace Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A Profound And Heavy "Hymn" For Our Times January 18, 2011
By D'Ann
Format:Audio CD
When Killswitch Engage guitarist, songwriter, producer and all-around metalcore mastermind Adam Dutkiewicz teamed with vocalist Jesse Leach to create Times Of Grace, many probably expected the results to sound like "Alive Or Just Breathing, Part II." Leach, after all, fronted Killswitch Engage on that breakthrough CD, only to leave the band just a few months later. He was replaced by Howard Jones, and the rest, as they say, is history. (Meanwhile Leach, who suffered from voice problems during his time with Killswitch, learned some proper vocal technique and went on to sing for the criminally unappreciated Seemless.)

"Hymn Of A Broken Man" does sound like the sequel to "Alive" in places ("Strength In Numbers," "Live In Love," "Hope Remains" and "Worlds Apart" would fit on any Killswitch CD--and there's nothing wrong with that, IMHO) but this album also extends far beyond the metalcore template. "Fight For Life" and "The End Of Eternity" call to mind Tool and (as another reviewer noted) Alice In Chains. "The Forgotten One" is a bluesy, bare-bones acoustic song (and I wish there were more like this one, I love Jesse's vocals here.) "In The Arms Of Mercy" is a heartbreakingly beautiful instrumental. And "Fall From Grace" brings the proceedings to a close with a song that manages to be at once heavy, ethereal and beautiful. Dutkiewicz actually sings lead on "Fall From Grace" and shares lead vocal duties with Leach on several other tracks, notably "The Forgotten One," "Until The End Of Days" and the title song. While he lacks Leach's range and depth, Dutkiewicz's singing here is surprisingly serious and emotional, for a man otherwise known as metal's class clown.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal: Reborn January 18, 2011
By Khyron
Format:Audio CD
Back in 2002 a little-known metal band from Massachusetts quiety released one of the most important and influential metal records of the decade. Fast forward to 2011 and Killswitch Engage's "Alive or Just Breathing" is heralded as a watershed moment for the burgeoning metal/hardcore scene. Unfortunately for fans it marked the last time that Jesse Leach, the band's lyricist and vocalist, would record with Adam D and Killswitch. Leach abruptly left the group, withdrawing himself from music altogether for several years. In his place the band hired Howard Jones who, while a gifted vocalist in his own right, never really seemed to fill Jesse's shoes. Though Killswitch continued to refine their sound, record powerful songs and play to ever larger audiences, for many fans, the band had lost something irreplaceable.

Enter Times of Grace and "The Hymn of a Broken Man." Call it a debut or a reunion or a supergroup, it really doesn't matter. What Adam and Jesse have given their fans is a dark, furious and beautiful record about adversity, despair and the power of redemption. Hymn is not only a better sounding record than anything Adam or Jesse have done since AOJB, it has a certain weight to it; a depth and sense of naked honesty sorely lacking from other metal records. But you were expecting that. Jesse's voice and delivery take a backseat to noone's. Adam's multi-instrumental talents (he recorded all guitars, bass, drums and wrote most of the lyrics for this record) are matched only by his skill behind a soundboard. Adam D could be the George Martin of Metal.

But perhaps it's where this album defies expectations that it shines the brightest. The thick as molasses bass intro and subsequent slow chug of "Fight for Life" wouldn't sound out of place on an Alice in Chains record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing January 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This is pretty much how I knew I would react to this album, ever since I found out of it's existence two years ago. From beginning to end it's so perfect, and I don't know how it's possible but it gets better and better every time I hear it. And I literally have every chorus stuck in my head for daaaaays. It's almost what I'd call a musical spiritual successor to Alive or Just Breathing from Killswitch Engage. All the same elements are there, just built into a new broader direction. Adam D's unique songwriting is still present, and Jesse Leach's vocals still give goosebumps. From what I've heard, this album was meant to cross the lines of several genres, and it does that without sounding forced, and staying true to the style. And because of that, I'm hoping it will help spark interest in metal music again from those outside of that scene. So buy this album (if it sounds like something you will like, then you will) and play it for your friends, your girlfriend, your wife, your parents, anyone who will appreciate it for what it's worth, a beautiful heavy record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eloquently Intense SPIRIT-FILLED RAWK! July 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
WOW! haha my God, this album is so amazing. Jesse, the vocalist, is extremely poetic and bold in his lyrics of triumph and victory over hard times and life struggles. Jesus is the reason he is living, and Jesus' Spirit is ALIVE inside Jesse; a true, anti-religious Christian :)

Musically, it is as good as it gets. from hard heavy-hitters to simple-life, classy acoustic ballads. very well done and extremely HOPEFUL and Destiny-driven rock music. :D

Jesus lives inside all of us, and through Jesus, Jesse has been able to communicate true hope. love, and Destiny :)

i am at my lowest point in life; a new christian or Christ-Follower, few friends and seemingly Zero Hope.. but this album, from God is giving me hope for the future and to push in with STRENGTH. there is ALWAYS a light at the end of that tunnel! DEATH IS VICTORY :) Jesus Lives and Loves.. Love you all :) buy this CD and keep this band on the road and bringing the great message of hope through Jesus to ALL :)
