3.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars if you like the style; only 3 stars for me
For the quality of the arrangements, I'd have to give this 5 stars and it would be 5 stars for anyone who likes the musical style. The style didn't grab me, so it was only 3 stars for me.

I love when artists take traditional hymns and give them a different sound so they sound fresh and new but still familiar. Bart Millard has done so very skillfully and if...

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD blew me away!, March 26, 2009

To be honest the first Hymned album did not impress me too much as I compared it to other bluegrass/country/hymn music. But this is like you are walking around in New Orleans worshiping the Lord with a full jazz/bluegrass/southern band backing you up (I don't know how to describe it any better than that). It is refreshing because worship music can tend to sound the same as every other worship album, which isn't horrible, I still love it. But Bart Millard raised the bar and totally brought in a new feel, a new style, and some great songs. I recommend this album to everyone that asks me what my favorite hymn albums are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It!, September 19, 2008
This review is from: Hymned Again (Audio CD)
Wonderful music; wonderful message in these old hymns. And a beautiful job done by Bart Millard. I immediately ordered the first CD he made, Hymned #1, which I didn't realize existed. For anyone who is tired of pop-sounding, generic love songs and wanting music you can sing along to and worship while you do, this is the CD for you. It includes one song he co-wrote which fits right in with the old hymns, and is just as beautiful as they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing Take on Old Hymns, August 30, 2008
This review is from: Hymned Again (Audio CD)
I have to admit that I have not heard "Hymned no. 1" so I can't compare this effort to its predecessor. However, the New-Orleans influenced arrangements on this CD are tastefully done, with a variety that includes the Harry Connick, Jr. style of arrangement, pure Dixieland, swampier Dr. John influence as well as some styles not steeped in bourbon street. I was pleasantly surprised as song after song brought a smile to my face. If you were brought up singing hymns in church, but appreciate more contemporary fare musically, you could not ask for a better collection. Bart and producer Brown Bannister manage to freshen up these wonderful songs without the smarmy "adult contemporary" sound that seems to permeate the CCM scene. It's not a rock 'n' roll record by any stretch, but the arrangements and musicianship should have you leaving the CD on 'repeat' for quite a while! Oh yeah, the one original song on the CD, "Jesus Cares for Me" is a duet with none other than Vince Gill -- enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bless yourself with this album!, November 13, 2009

I happened to fall over Bart Millard on Youtube and hurried to Amazon to find a CD and listen to samples. I bought Hymned Again and I can't stop smiling. If you love tradtional church hymns, then you don't want this. If you can open your mind to new experiences with beloved hymns, then try it. Bart Millard doesn't hit one wrong note and neither do the musicians. You will never hear "What a Day It Will Be" done better. In fact, I love all his versions of all the hymns. The album is a wonderful mix of blues, bluegrass, and rock that all meld to make a completely unique mix that makes you want to "enter His halls with thanksgiving and praise" singing, dancing, and clapping. Thank you, thank you Bart for gifting us with your tremendous talent and vision.
