Don't Judge A Book...,

Let's be honest, if you're reading this review you either loved Living Colour and are only now seeking outside sources for your addiction, OR someone has finally given you the "hey there's a band out there that you have GOT to try" tip. So how does this one (and unfortunately only) Corey solo pan out? Well, if you loved Living Colour you will at the very least be satisfied to hear Corey's voice on something familiar. For the artists among us, this is an AMAZING show of talent that showcases Corey's background influences and vocal/stylistic range. You WILL find a song on this cd that touches you. It's a must buy.

Do Yourself a Favor, Buy this CD!,

Y'all, if you do nothing else in your life, buy this CD. It is worth every penny. I can listen to this album from front to back without skipping through, which is an excellent thing when it comes to CD listening. Also, Corey sings each note clearly and strong; you can understand each word!(Most artists jumble their words so much that they sound like they're singing in another language!). The BEST songs are "Hot Buttered Soul"(nice blues/soul/r&b feel), "Little Girl"(has a nice Al Green type feel), "Things are Getting in the Way"(nice blues feel) and "Lowball Express"(sounds straight from the cool '70's). Heck! All of the darn songs are the BEST! Corey's voice has so much soul and emotion and it's amazing that his album does not get any radio airplay here. This album is truly the "best kept secret" in CD listening. I loved Corey ever since his Living Colour days and even back then I was just wishing and hoping that he would come out with a solo CD that included ballads. Boy, have my prayers been answered! Please, whip out that credit card and order this CD today, right now, right this minute. This will be one of the best you've ever owned! But don't just take my word for it, listen to the song samples yourself, you'll be convinced.

Ex-Living Colour frontman makes good,
By
This review is from: Hymns (Audio CD)
He leaves most of his funky Living Colour roots behind, but Corey Glover delivers a fine mix of rock, gospel, and soul. "One", "Silence", and "Do You First, Then Do Myself" are standouts. He has one of the better, stronger voices in rock and roll -- I've heard it described as "Broadway ready". Don't expect a Living Colour record, and there are no Vernon Reid guitar histrionics here. But "Hymns" serves up a satisfying selection of musicianship, powerful vocals, and good time music.

Hymns is a great album!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hymns (Audio CD)
Intriguing is the first word that comes to mind when describing Corey Glover's solo set, "Hymns." Not your average LaFace project, "Hymns" finds Glover effortlessly running through a gamut of emotional states -- lustful, affectionate, lovelorn, optimistic, and religious -- as well as a spate of musical genres, including rock, gospel, blues, and countrified Black soul (complete with harmonica riffs). Along with his exciting mix of melodic compositions, Glover is also an incredible vocalist, brandishing his gift like a weapon capable of piercing the soul. Expect to hear Glover only on open-minded stations until brainwashed programmers are won over by his perennially interesting videos.-Billboard Magazine

Ok...I'll go straight to the point...
I was expecting a more rock oriented album...period. I was somehow...dissapointed(??)when I listened to Hymns, that's when I found out that almost 60% of the songs were ballads or plain R&B (Nothing, NOTHING against that), the thing is, Mr. Glover for me is one, if not the BEST rock vocalist out there, when that man wants to scream or rock out, he certianly does it like no other. I know...this is a solo album and by all means I guess he wanted to explore more outside the box that LIVING COLOUR is (a HUGE box full of treats that is)...but then again...if you listen to the tracks SERMON or DO YOU FIRST THEN DO MYSELF....well that what I was expecting this album to be, rock oriented and groove oriented. Don't ge me wrong it is a GREAT ALBUM....BUY IT!!!...by all means whatever Corey Glover does it's EXCELLENT...I'm just a rock, metal adrelanile junkie that simply wanted to rock my head off to Corey Glover's. I will store this album for a couple of years...then I will pick it up again and give it a listen with proper expectations. HOPE in the near future for a new release..regardless what it is, I'LL BUY...it could be lullabies or children songs....as long as they are performed by the one and only Corey Glover!!!!

SINGERS S--I--N--G; CRITICS CRITICIZE,

Never listen to a critic; listen to your fellow music lovers. The first time I found "Hymns" I passed it by. Don't make that mistake. If you love Corey Glover, and I know you do, you'll love "Hymns." I know what you'll be saying after you hear it, so I'll say "you're welcome" now.

This is a fantastic album front to back. Everything seems to have been planned out for nothing but perfection.Corey sings several different styles. The back-up vocals and string arrangements are out of this world. Very different from the Living Colour days, although drummer Will Calhoun makes a guest appearance. This is a must have CD. I hope Corey continues this type of solo effort. And I wish MTV and radio would play this album. It's a shame that more people aren't being exposed to this kind of talent.

Do not believe Michael Ruby's Review,
By christian (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews

This CD is great. In spite of the review given by Michael Ruby, this is a vocalist who shines in any capacity. It is not worse off because it has many flavorings, it is MUCH better off. There id definitely something to fit any mood that you might be in. Overall, there is not a bad song on the album.

the ONE,

This cd is worth having if only for "ONE" which condenses the pain and regret of lost love into a meditation of self. The current state of black pop is so sad that the only place I saw the video for "April Rain" was at a Sears in Dallas. Get this CD and be stirred, redeemed, and lifted.

Rocks My Soul !!,

This review is from: Hymns (Audio CD)
I was reading People magazine and came across a review for this new Corey Glover album. I remember him from his Living Colour days and loved the song "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" - but never bought any of the Living Colour Albums. So....next day I'm wandering around T****R Records (sorry Amazon!) and picked up the CD along with 7 others. Got home, threw it on the CD player - and it's never been off for the past 4 hours. This CD is fabulous. I've yet to even listen to my other purchases. Corey Glover must have one of the best voices in rock music. Now I'm off to order all the Living Colour CDs - on AMAZON of course! He kind of sounds like Carl Anderson..the guy who played Judas Iscariot in the "Jesus Christ Superstar" movie. This CD was a great purchase ....TEN out of TEN etc ....etc. |
