Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Salt Lake City, Utah's own progressive/power metal act Katagory V, return with their 4th album "Hymns of Dissension", displaying yet again and even more versatile, dynamic and razor-sharp metal release, and rapidly following up only a year and a half after their breakthrough third album, The Rising Anger on Nightmare Records.Keeping true with their known style of combining straight-ahead, power infused metal along side elements of old-school thrash and progressive rock; Katagory V yet again branches out even farther into more melodic, syncopated and hook-laden territories with this release. The band continues building their strength on writing songs with variety and diversity, ensuring the listener is taken on a journey each time. Katagory V began writing "Hymns of Dissension" during the Spring/Summer of 2006 and entered Streamline Sound studios in February of 2007 with producer/engineer Mike Foweks. They would spend three months tracking the album live in the studio, something the band had not done before on previous recordings. In doing so, Katagory V captured the energy and aggression that encompassed their live performances. To help capture the overall feel for the album, the band would employed the talents of famed artist Mattias Norén (Evergrey, Kamelot, Into Eternity) to create a lurid and thought provoking album cover for Hymns of Dissension . Now, Katagory V return in 2007 with a stronger, darker and more vengeful album for the metal masses.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Band From NightMare Records!, November 23, 2007
This review is from: Hymns of Dissension (Audio CD)
At first glace I thought this album was just another Metal album with some progmetal touches. However once I sat down and gave it a good listen I found it was soo much more. The vocals are great and the vocal lines will catch you. The guitars have a great blend of hard core metal mixed with emotional melodic touches.

My only problem at all with this album is the production qulity could be abit better. Don't get me wrong it's really not that bad. But if I had to find any issue at all it would be that. Still very good to listen to and a great album work picking up.

I give it a four and a half out of five.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nightmare Records Delivers Another Gem -- Katagory V's Hymns of Dissension (Pssst: It ROCKS!), April 4, 2009
By Just Bill (Grand Rapids, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Once in a while a band releases an album that grabs me from the first track and doesn't let go. Katagory V's Hymns of Dissension is one of those albums.

Of course, I expect no less from Minneapolis-based indie label Nightmare Records, owned by veteran metal vocalist Lance King.

What I look for in a power-metal album is (1) excellent vocals, (2) shredding guitar playing, (3) crunchy guitar riffs, (4) catchy arrangements, and (5) clear-as-a-bell production.

In my book, Hymns of Dissension meets the RDA of essential metal -- and then some.

As I listened to this excellent album again (I've had it for 7-8 months, adding it to my CD rotation at least monthly), I heard strains of another band. At first, I couldn't put my finger on it. It was like trying to grasp a fleeting memory that eluded me. So I listened again. Then turned off the CD and listened to the melodies in my head.

Then it hit me. I know for some this will sound way off base. But Hymns of Dissension reminds me of Arch-era Fates Warning. It's not the riffs, which tend to be faster than Fates. It's the soaring vocals and some of the melodies, combined with the immense riffs.

I'm sure no other listener will make this connection. But I did. And that's a big plus for Katagory V. Fates is one of my all-time favorite metal bands.

Okay. All comparisons aside, Hymns of Dissension offers up catchy, guitar-driven metal that bears up to repeated listening. Some songs are rip-roaring. Others are more subdued (the acoustic-guitar opening to "Can You Hear Them," for example, reminds me of the opening to some of Iced Earth's acoustic songs). But each is unique in its own way, and uniquely Katagory V.

If your taste in metal is anything like mine, I present Katagory V -- a band that gets better with every album. I can't wait to hear what they release next!
