Editorial Reviews

It's a peaceful, quiet Sunday morning on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Bright sunlight reflects off a calm sea, a brief, warm shower forms a rainbow on the slopes of Mauna Loa. A small, colorful wooden church is shaded by mango and palm trees in a tiny coastal fishing village. The soft island air, redolent with the gentle scent of plumeria and the richer fragrances of passion fruit, is stirred by sweet music from the church. The songs are distinctly Hawaiian, yet somehow familiar. These are the hymns of Hawai'i, the songs that George Kahumoku, Jr. sang as a child growing up on the Big Island. They are the hymns that have helped to hold his family together over several generations.

With this recording, George realizes a dream he has had for many years. He has long wanted to preserve this music, which has been an important part of his spiritual life. When Daniel Ho proposed that they collaborate on a recording of Hawaiian hymns, George immediately agreed. These are the hymns, the hïmeni, that George learned as a young boy seated with his parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and their children around the kitchen table.

For George, the little and sometimes not so little tragedies of life are just ways of bringing one closer to God. "George Kahumoku has gotten a little off track, so let's give him a bout of cancer right at this point in his life," is the way he puts it. Especially at these times, not just the words, but also the melodies and rhythms of this wonderful music have brought him comfort and peace. He hopes that this recording will do the same for others.

5.0 out of 5 stars not just another hymn compilation, June 1, 2004

This review is from: Hymns of Hawaii (Audio CD)
This album is not just another compilation of hymns done in the style the artist prefers. All of the songs on this album sound as if they were originally written in the hawaiian tongue (and some were). I first bought this CD when at a little courtyard in Maui where Kahumoku's family was playing. It was so intimate and they were so full of spirit, they recommended this album to me when I asked for really relaxing music. This was my first Hawaiian CD and from it grew a collection of many more.

In summary, I enjoy this CD when I am relaxing on a sunny day and when eating dinner on a stormy night. The music is very relaxing and soothing, and definitely not cookie cutter by any means. It always lifts my spirit and soothes my soul. It is interesting how in the description Kahumoku says how this music has helped to hold his family together over several generations because this music has literally, in front of my eyes, has helped to mend a broken family tie. There is a spirit of love that has been carried down through this music that I think all should experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars great music, August 13, 2000

Don't be put off by the "hymns" in the title. This music is uplifting in the same way the views from the Na Pali coast are. It will transport you, soothe you, and help you to become a kaimaniana.

Really wasn't impressed with this CD. Wasn't at all what i was looking for. Previewing the songs prior to purchase was a bit deceiving. Didn't care for this at all.
