5.0 out of 5 stars 4 great CDs of traditional hymns
If you've ever wanted a collection of hymns just like they sing in the old days, here it is. 2.0 out of 5 stars I've been lead astray!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 great CDs of traditional hymns, October 8, 2003

If you've ever wanted a collection of hymns just like they sing in the old days, here it is. The songs are wonderfully rendered without any of the "artistic improvisation" that modern day Christian music artists feel like they have to do to emulate rock and pop stars. Instead, there is either an organ accompaniment or piano, and some wonderful male and female voices. Some are solos, and most are groups. I gave a set to my pastor and his wife, and they were very thrilled that this set is available. You can easily follow along with a hymnal because the words are enunciated clearly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traditional Hymns!, December 12, 2002

This is a 4-CD set of 100 classic hymns. There are no hideous re-arrangements of these traditional hymns! Thank God for that! Don't get me wrong, I'm sure people like that other stuff, but as for me, I like the hymns the way I sing them in church!

Most of the songs are sung by a small choir with an organ accompaniment. There are some songs which have other instruments, but that's the exception. The songs are well sung and the music quality is pretty good. The only flaw I noted was that there were a few songs which had a slight word change here or there. Without a hymnal of my own (which I hope is on the way), I can't check this out in detail. But it isn't enough for me to knock it down a rating.

Bottom line: If you are looking for traditional hymns done traditionally for a GREAT price, get this 4-CD set!!!

I decided to buy this collection based on the other reviews posted here - I was (and am still) looking for a fairly comprehensive collection of hymns that are enjoyable to listen to. I have to disagree with the other reviewers on many points. To me, this is not the "traditional" church music that I grew up with. As I listened to the CDs, I was irritated to find that EVERY SONG SOUNDS IDENTICAL. Have you ever been to a church where they use "canned music" (everything is played from a CD instead of with live instruments, like an actual piano) - that is what this CD sounds like to me. The beat of the music appears to be made with a keyboard's drum machine - it is just so . . .canned - that's the best way I can describe it. I found that I had to make it a real point to listen to the lyrics to disseminate one song from the next - they just all kind of run together because the key is the same, the beat is the same, the voices are the same, the lead singers are usually the same, etc.

Also - one other point - if you like to sing along with the music (females), you will want to have a high soprano voice - all of these songs are way out of my alto vocal range. At times, the choir sounds fairly shrill because all of the music is performed is such a high range.

Don't be drawn in simply because this set is so large. I was really excited to see how many songs this collection contained - truly, all of my favorites that I grew up singing, and still sing in church. Don't be taken in, simply because there are a lot of songs to be had here - I would much rather have half the songs, but some quality to go along with them. Alas, I am going to keep looking for a good collection - this definitely isn't it.

There's no fancy musical arrangements or sophisticated studio production. The CD jackets (4 CDS!!) look just ordinary. But the music inside is so divine! Just like listening to your church choir. 4 CDs, 100 favorite hymns for less than 14 dollars is a great buy. I am going to buy one more set to give it to someone.

I am a homeschooler and really wanted my kids to know the old standards that they are not likely to be exposed to otherwise. This was SUCH a blessing. I was not raised in a church (I did not trust in Christ until I was 28), so when other Christians would rattle off wonderful, edifying lines of the old faithfuls, all I could do was a line or two of Amazing Grace. Also, I can't carry a tune or read music well, so just having a hymnal didn't really help. This is great. The kids and I can listen to it, get the tune, follow along/sing along with our hymnals, and eventually we can each have it in our hearts. I do agree with the reviewer who said that all the songs sound basically alike, but I found that a help rather than a detraction. I am not an efficianado of any sort, I just wanted the basic tune, the words sung clearly, and no added modernizations or flourishes. And this is the best I've found for my basic needs. How wonderful to have my little ones singing "Higher Ground" around the house while they play! Five stars!

Very well done, feels like you're in Church with an organ playing! Does not include lyrics, don't know why I was expecting that. But still the best value with so many hymns!

Beautiful arrangements, beautiful voices. These 4 CD's are incredible and I highly recommend them to anyone searching for traditional spiritual music to stir their heart. I find it very comforting. The value is excellent too, you get a lot of great music for the price of a single CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 100 Hymns & Priase songs, November 3, 2006

I would recommend this 100 Hymns & praise CD because it has all the classic favorite hymns that I like. It's a complete set and all of the songs were wonderful with beautiful vocals. I would highly Recommend it to anyone who likes traditional hymns. Some of the CD had similiar tone/instrument sounds and most of them are choir sung and not individual vocals but overall the songs were AWESOME! This set is great to Praise God at home or in the car!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album of Christian Hymns!, June 28, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 100 Hymns & Praise Classics (Audio CD)
This is one of the best music albums I've found! About 2/3 of the songs on this CD are sung with simple organ or piano accompaniment, and the choir members sing the songs well too. This CD has been a blessing to my family, friends, and myself. About 1/3 of the songs though, do have a more modern beat and I don't like them (that why it gets only 4 stars), but there's still about 65 songs on the CD that are great. If you enjoy singing hymns at church from your hymnal, like I do, then you'll probably really like this CD.

It is hard to find compilations that give you more than a taste of the music you want. That is not the case with these CD's. It lifts my heart to hear older more traditional Hymns performed in this age of pop worship which I will admit has it's place. Any form of worship to the Lord is better than most of the degrading music on secular CD's, radio and TV. Not all of the renditions hit the bullseye but just hearing them done with the reverence they deserve is truly the reason I bought this set. Just the sheer number of Hymns is gratifying. Praise the Lord!!!
