Phil at his best!,
By
This review is from: Hymnsongs (Audio CD)
Phil Keaggy's instrumental albums of the past five years or so get more play in my house than anything else I own. This album is no exception. It takes itself more seriously than either 'Zion' or 'Lights of Madrid,' and seems to rest in between those two in it's theme. The composition, musicianship, and recording quality in 'Hymnsongs' is amazing. The album doesn't revisit any old territory either. Every track is unexpected and beautiful. There's a version of 'Nothing But the Blood' on this album that you just have to hear! It's completely different and soooooo much better than the version on 'Crimson and Blue.' If you find pop music boring, you should love this album as well as Keaggy's other more recent albums. He puts most 'jam bands' (Phish, etc.) to shame with his level of creativity.

Phil at his best. One his greatest instrumentals if not his best to date. It's been in my car CD player for the past month and I'm still listening to every note and lick on those tracks.

Keaggy is really at his best on this album. There are a variety of different playing styles and is not boring. Don't buy this album if you expect famous hymn melodies to stand out, because they don't.

Many people reference other instrumental albums by Phil Keaggy as his best ones, but I have to say (IMO), that this one's his best so far, it's tight and beautiful, great musicianship and what I found very interesting is that the booklet explains a brief history behind each song.
If you collect Maestro Keaggy's music, this is a must-have by all means, and if you're a first time listener this is the perfect start point for you; either way a superb instrumental album!!!!!!!!

First offf, i am not currently a fan of Phil's. Nonetheless, I recognize that this man is a gift to the guitar and to music, showing magni-fabulous talents and creativity on the strings while delighting even the non-musician's ears. Very well worth hearing.
