4.0 out of 5 stars Wow, time flys!
This is a great documentary and a cool time capsule. My band had the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time and were included in this great flick so, obviously, I'm a little biased in my praise. A killer cast of characters, some great music and a super interesting glimpse into a wild time. Hype delivers! We all look so young, it's hard to believe it...

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring overated documentery
If you're a fan of that genre of "music," I guess this movie is for you. For me, it was nothing more than a cure for my insomnia.

Blech!

We all look so young, it's hard to believe it was over ten years ago that this all happened. My only complaint is that Rontrose looks exactly the same as he does now! What's up with that?!

Everything you need to know about the grunge scene : when it started, first bands to break out of seattle etc. Hype! did a really good job in more than one way, it gave us the facts about the North West, how these facts played a major role in what happened with the music(all told by people who actually live in Seatlle). The interviews are great especially the one with the two colorful Sub pop founders : Jonthan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt, and the ones with the bands are especially funny, except for the interview with Eddie Veder(he's from San Diego: no sense of humour!). This tape doesn't limit itself to explaining the grunge scene and sound, it talks about the tragedies of sucess, and the media's negative impact on the scene by mass marketing it. You'll watch this one over and over again, see some great concert footage, hear about the tragedy surrounding Kurt Cobain and deceased Mother Love Bone singer Andy Wood. It's comforting, being a musician myself, knowing that the bands responsible for the great music scene did it because the enjoyed it and that's should be the only motivation for beeing in a band and playing music.

5.0 out of 5 stars HYPE!, January 4, 2005
This review is from: Hype! (DVD)
After watching HYPE for the first time last year, I was left in awe at the beautifully created masterpiece that I had witnessed. It came as a shock to me that this film was largely unheard of, and very upsetting when I tried to get my hands on a copy for myself but could not find one. Therefore I am very pleased that Lionsgate decided to take on HYPE and release it in DVD format. This movie opened my eyes to the wonders of the Seattle "scene" and the grunge music that I had previously ignored. The film even inspired me to travle to Seattle and explore it myself! You do not need to be a fan of NIRVANA or Soundgarden to enjoy this film as it deals with many other grunge acts besides the popular ones, and it is more of an exploration into the societal aspects of this large cultural movement than a direct focus on certain bands. Enough said, I highly reccommend this movie to anyone interested in musical history. HYPE is a crowning achievement in my books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changing..., June 18, 2006
This review is from: Hype! (DVD)
I saw this sometime back in 2001, I believe. A friend of mine bought it on VHS for a dollar from some bargain bin somewhere.
Being a huge fan of heavy music and rock over the past 20+ years, this movie opened my eyes to a whole new scene like nothing ever had before. Of course I had been a fan of Nirvana, AIC and Soundgarden in the early to mid 90's, but this film exposes you to the origins of all that. With a little independant research, you can then find all sorts of gems of bands and albums you might truly enjoy. Mudhoney, The Supersuckers and The Murder City Devils are three of my favorite bands and I first sought them out as a direct result of watching "Hype" and then doing my own investigating from there. It won't steer you wrong. What's up with the new cover though? Used to be black and white stage diving scene with red letters.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Look At Northwest Music (in the 80s and 90s), November 4, 2001
This review is from: Hype [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is the best (and probably only) look at the madness and silliness surrounding all the HYPE of the Northwest music "scene." It was because of this documentary I looked deeper into all the great bands from this area (and not JUST from Seattle.)

I only wish it were longer. Like any great movie, you don't want it to end. You'll discover some great bands and songs (i.e. Supersuckers, The Gits, Mark Lanegan, etc.)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, September 9, 2000
This review is from: Hype [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Being the hard core grunge fan that I am I absolutley love this video. It helped me gain more knowledge of some of my favorite bands. I've always been intrested in the seattle music scene and this was just a tool to help me learn more. If you like this check out "the sound and the fury" a good book on the seattle music scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, November 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hype [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie is the best done documentary around. The bands and individuals in this movie are real and uncensored. There is no other movie around that will give you the feeling that this movie gives you. I love the seattle music and my mom didn't know anything about it when she went to see this movie. She said it was probably the best movie she had seen in a while.

Very,VERY good stuff. I have been a fan of the (shall we say..)loud stuff for quite some time.Everybody gets a turn at bat. In the 70's it was The Saints, The Nils, The Buzzcocks,Ramones,Pistols,Clash,Handsome Dick Manatoba and the gang....the whole hybrid thrash/political/sex starved/straight edge -Bad Brains,Black Flag,Husker Du,Minor Threat,GBH,Fear,Circle Jerks,Anti System,Misfits,Scream and so on.I love the film because it had heart and it had an insight on its own implosion. I happen to like a lot of the bands that were on this tape(I am from NY BTW)The Posies needed to be grouped in there because they played with (and are friends with) Nirvana, which brings me to my next comment...If you don't like the sound--"FINE"-but when you are happy because someone is dead, you are a messed up person. If you like the Hollies, good for you. I like their stuff as well, but to wish death upon someone because you think the movie "sucks" is absolute rubbish. These bands kick ass on their own terms and did not ask to be filmed. I for one am happy they were.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musicians with a sense of humor and intellect who rock, January 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hype [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Hype proved to be an excellent documentary covering the essential grunge bands The musicians were interesting and had a sense of humor. Some of them, such as Eddie Vedder had worth while takes on stardom and the role money and commerce play in it. This movie created the perfect atmosphere surronding the northwest rock explosion. It also introduced viewers to some excellent, underrated bands who never hit the mainstream. A definate must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars About time they put this thing on DVD!, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Hype! (DVD)
I first saw this rockumentary on HBO way back in the day (1997 it think) it blew my socks off. This was my kinda music (I have all the soundagarden albums) and someone made a movie about the history and back story. It was awesome. Last year my friends and I were having a conversation about Nirvana. I asked them if they had seen Hype! They just shrugged and looked at me blankly. I looked for it online and could only find it on VHS. Then last month I saw it was coming out on DVD, so I pre-ordered it on Amazon.com with out a second thought. Watching it reminds me of those by gone days when it was cool to be a loser. I also really liked all the special features brought to us by the DVD format, including additional live preformances by Pond, and The Gits. If you were ever into the punk fused metal movement called "grunge" or just a music lover, this DVD will show you the anatomy of a major cultural movment, like San Francisco in '70s, or London in the '60s, and it's consiquences.
